  • Singapore ranked as "best place to be a mother" in Asia: Survey

Singapore is the best place to be a mother in Asia, an annual worldwide report found. The report by children's aid agency Save the Children also named Singapore as the safest place in Asia for children to be born in.

The State of the World's Mothers report compared the status of mothers and their children between 176 countries. It found that Singapore is ranked the 15th-best place in the world to be a mother, based on the mother's health, education and economic status, and the health and nutrition of children. This puts the country ahead of all Asian nations, including Japan, South Korea and Malaysia. Overall, Finland is the best place in the world to be a mother.

In determining where the safest place for children to be born was, the agency looked at the number of deaths within the first days for every 1,000 live births. In Singapore, the rate is less than 0.5 deaths for every 1,000 live births. Globally, one million children die each year within the first day.

Mr Mike Novell, regional director of Save the Children, noted that Singapore has skilled healthcare workers in antenatal care, delivery of babies and post-natal care. "It can and should serve as a model for other countries," he said.
