Hi! Actually expressing out and the actual sucking by baby is different amount coz baby sucking is more efficient then breast pump. dont stress yourself by measuring how much you can pump out. Rather, check whether baby is drinking well. I count by the minutes. Best if he can suck 15-30min in one feed coz my baby is still quite small, dont need to require that he suck too long. Also, check whether he urinate and poo many times a day. His poo should be mustard color (yellowish) not dark or greenish if he's on TBF. Urine should be clear and slightly yellowish. If baby suck 5min-15min each breast, he may not get enough hind milk. So what I did is I pump out 5-15min to release tension in my breast to keep it soft and supple, and then feed baby so that he gets fore milk and hind milk. If baby get only fore milk, there's not enough fats and his poo will have greenish bits.
you also try to rest more and get more sleep. Try to persevere and not to supplement with Forumla milk. If you supplement, your breastmilk will decrease.
i have started to supplement with formula milk from his birth... cos my milk came in the 4th day and it was not enough...but i always tried to pump til i was drained hoping that my body will generate more milk... but i do not see any increase in breastmilk til now the 3rd week...
how many times do you pump/feed baby in a day? i could only do around 6 pumps/latches in a day with 3 hourly interval.
When baby was about 6 days old, I can fill half a 0 month baby bottle with 10min pumping. I think that was enough already coz baby's tummy is very small. He will drink whatever amount you give him. Is he sucking for 30min per feed? If you supplement with formula, your milk supply will be affected because there isn't enough demand. Baby's sucking is the best stimulant.
you can try to feed him more breast milk now since your milk supply increased.
I feed baby every 2-3 hour interval in the day. I didn't count how may times. From morning 6am onwards, I feed until about 9pm then he goes to sleep and wakes up for night feeds at 2-3am. Sometimes he's happy, he drink 40min, 30min one breast, 10min the other. Sometimes he's not happy or sleepy, he suckle for 20min and its enough. its not easy feeding my baby coz he falls asleep easily and I have to try all methods to wake him up. Burbing him, rubbing his chest, massage his feet, unswaddle, swaddle back etc etc. Almost like fighting a battle every feed! Its difficult but I will persevere because I know my breast milk is the best for my baby. Actually I think your 6 latches 3 hourly is good enough ! That is for the day right? He wakes up once at night for feed?
That's strange. I was told if I dont let him suckle 20-30min on one breast, he will not get enough hind milk. So I feed 30min drain one breast, then 30min next feed to drain the other breast. Also, I try not to limit the length of time he can suckle. If he wants to suckle on one breast for very long, I won't stop him when 30min is up.
Envy you! How I wish my baby will drink every hour! He keeps sleeping and its difficult waking him up for feeds. That's why I tend to feed him longer. Maybe coz you feed him very often, he gets fore and hind milk. Does your baby wake up himself and cry for milk or do you wake him up?
I see. But my baby won't cry. I dont know whether he's hungry or not but he just sleeps. I just have to struggle and wait for him to be more wakeful. Taking care of a little baby is so difficult! Motherhood isn't easy. I think I won't have another baby anymore Felt so demoralized every evening.
Amazingly yes, he can wake up 4-5hr later for milk if I let him! But I won't. Yesterday, I tried waking him up every 2.30hour for feeds. Its a torture to me waking him up coz he's so sleepy and sometimes I want to just let him sleep, dont disturb him. Very heartache to see him sleep so nice and I have to wake him up. But I tell myself that is for his good. If he keeps sleeping, he won't get his nutrients and won't grow well. I hope this can be instilled as a habit - to wake up 2-3hourly for feeds. So far, yesterday is good. At least when he wakes up, he drinks his milk for at least 5-10min. Can you imagine I use 1hour to feed him 20min of breast milk?! faint!
Dear all, I had given birth to my prince on 21st oct.
Today is his day 2 at Hm. He sleep from 3am till 9am and did not cry for milk and wake up smiling. I just breastfeeded him but how would we know if the supply is enough for him or not?
Hi mummies , I gv birth on 21.10.2011 @ week 38.
We just got discharge today Baby is 2.79kg .
In the hospital since Fri, i let baby latch on and in. Today I got breastmilk keep flowing and wet my top.
But my baby is very sleepy, he refuse to suck no matter how I massage, unswaddle, swaddle, tickle....
He just wanna sleep. How do I he him to drink? Today he no poo only urine 2 times
And you can really "tong" .. 7 cm then use the laughing gas. Perhaps the pain threshold is better for the second child? Cuz my friend didn't take the epidural for the second child
Congrats joanneneo & hotmilktea!! rest more yah
I'm always dripping with milk especially when it's almost time to feed and pump. Btw I feed expressed milk cuz easier to track how much baby drinks as compared to latching on. I started latching on but she rejected my left breast initially. Now I just latch her on both sides once in a while cuz latching on requires lots of time. She takes 1hr if she latches on now she's drinking 70ml - 100ml
Those who need more milk can try drinking lactating milk to increase the supply. Works pretty well I'm drinking anmum, mamil mama and similac mum interchangeably
