My boy is turning 19 mths old soon. I am very thankful that he is not picky eater but he never asks/calls for food.... as if he never gets hungry even after 4 hours of a main solid meal or milk feed. His weight has been stagnant at 11.3 kg for the past 6 mths! His weight was down from the 75th percentile when he was 10 months to the 34th percentile now! Sad...

I use this online growth chart calculator for easy checking but may not be 100% appropriate for our local Singapore babies/toddlers:

My twins are almost 21 months! They are very good eaters thus I do not worry about their appetite much. Only problem for me is my boy likes to take out the food from his mouth to see before putting in back in. Currently training him not to do it!

My twins cannot talk yet. They can make accidental sounds to imitate our words, but nothing meaningful except "jie jie" and "mama." Have any of yours started talked?

    Hi Chrystal,

Thanks for sharing in this thread. Wow, twins -- how lovely! Are they identical boys? I find twins intriguing and fun!
Maybe you can let him explore his food 1st bfr he eats them so tht he won't take it out later frm his mouth... perhaps he is interested in the food texture and taste and curious to knw wht happens when food goes into his mouth. I'm sure he will outgrow the habit when he is older. But I am sure sometimes as mums, we are afraid of the food getting cold and thus will not permit the kids to explore too much bfr eating...

To date, my Bboy (short for baby boy, his nickname!) has about 40 words in his vocab (mainly English words and some Mandarin). I do track and write down whenever he says a new word. I will try to repeat the word and encourage him to do the same when he uses a new word -- making use of the surrounding objects or people tht we can associate the word with so tht he actually knws wht it means and not just a fluke shot! But he still babbles (I can't understand a word!). His latest words this week were "pear" and "obey" (but I am quite certain he doesn't knw wht "obey" means! He doesn't obey mama most of the time!). He can't say any 3-syllable word yet but can say, "Go daddy!"

Each baby/child is unique and gifted in his/her own way and will learn at different pace and time. I am sure your twins will be talking in no time...

My 20-month old boy refuses to hold food in his bare hand/fingers to feed himself. I realised tht he doesn't like to get his hands dirty... and would wipe his hands on his shirt if we put food in his hand. He also gets frustrated/angry if we force food in his hand. He'd rather not eat the food and would throw the food on the floor... But he likes eating it when we feed him...
But he doesn't mind feeding himself using a spoon or a fork. It's just tht certain food like bread, cookies, fruits and crackers are best eaten using bare hands!

Anyone with the same problem? How to overcome this? We have tried feeding ourselves with our bare hands to encourage him to eat by himself but it didn't work.

I once saw a 12-month old baby feeding himself happily on a cheese sandwich and I wished mine could do the same... sigh...

    Hi hapieger,

Yes, kids can be fussy eaters at times. Have you tried feeding your little girl steamed fish meat
(-boned and broken into very small/fine pieces)? Since fish can have the fishy smell, you may want to add a little ginger, sesame oil, seasoning, etc. to eliminate the smell. I find we can "hide" fish meat easily in our kid's rice, porridge, noodles because it can be very soft and not very visible...

If you are concerned that your child is not getting enough proteins (esp. the essential amino acids from meats), you may want to look at other alternatives like dairy products, cheese, yoghurt, etc.
Some info here: Healthy Child Care Library of Articles - Nutrition Action

Wow, she's a talkative girl... must be very adorable at this stage.
My son likes to sing too... he gets the tune right but not all the words... ;-p

    Hi Carline,
Thanks for sharing. Our boys are probably almost at the same age!

Initially, he doesn't talk very much. But in the recent months, he has started talking much more, singing and imitating wht we say or what is on the tv. He has about 160 words in his verbal vocabulary now (mainly English and some Mandarin words). We read and sing to him a lot. We also use picture flash cards and whiteboard drawings to encourage him to read and recognise letters, words and numbers. We try to talk to him more slowly at times so that he could catch certain words easily and we repeat those words several times a day. We also avoid talking baby talk to him but instead talk to him as if he understands language like an adult. We asks him many questions and encourage him to give an answer. Now whenever we ask, "Why"? He will start by saying, "Because..." but of course he can't answer us all the time and he just stops there... haa..haa..

I guess each child develops differently at different stage. Some kids are just not the natural talkative type and they may prefer to listen and observe others rather than talk. dont't worry too much. Some of my friends' kids at this age dont't talk much either. They will soon pick up as they continue to observe and listen. Just keep talking and communicating to them not only in words but in actions (gestures, hugs, activities). Kids need a lot of assurance from adults. They may only say certain words if they are confident that they say it correctly. So they need lots of encouragement. For my son, even if he gets it wrong, we'd still encourage him by saying: "wow, you said it!, good try, it should be "....", repeat after mama, say it again please, ...etc." We sometimes avoid saying "no" or "wrong" when he pronounces the words incorrectly because I realised he can get discouraged easily.
