Single (unmarried) employees
A single (unmarried) employee is entitled to 12 weeks of maternity leave if she is covered under the Employment Act. She will be paid by her employer for the first eight weeks of maternity leave if she has fewer than two living children (excluding the newborn), and she has served her employer for at least 90 days before the birth of the child. Beyond the first eight weeks, maternity payment from the employer is voluntary and the employer is not entitled to claim any reimbursement from the government.
Some firms do not practice dual standards and also award the same terms to single parents. Contact your respective HR.
It's not entirely true that single mum will lose out 2 months of maternity leave pay. Do read up the gov website for more information.

A mother whose child is not a Singapore citizen and/or who is not lawfully married to the child’s father at the point of birth, but subsequently meets all the criteria within 12 months of the child’s birth, will be eligible for the remaining Government-Paid Maternity Leave benefits from the point when all the criteria are met.* Leave taken prior to the date of meeting all the criteria will be unpaid except for the first 8 weeks of maternity leave of the first 2 confinements for working mothers covered under the Employment Act.
Still got chance to claim leave and salary.
Hi dear how are you.? At last my girl totally official really one month in 12july plus my mother in law still ask me eat confinement food >.<
Malay actually did 45days of confinement.
for my #1 and #2, i purposely bring forward my baby 1month bash so i could stop confinement food earlier.
then i realise the pain im suffering all the time especially during cold days.
so #3, i did my confinement longer. (though my inlaws say, it won't help anymore since i never listen to them when i had my #1 -_-")
lol, no chance to claim for 1st girl; she's 14 mths now, but im not complaining but it'll b a chance for couples who r unwed to think through longer i guess...
i know confinement is supposed to b important.... But I never did stick with it since day 1....
went out almost everyday to get papers or lunch or shopping ... Can't stand staying home... Cept my mom in law did make the red dates drink for me daily... But she didn't insist on the food ....
But if you realised...buddist are the top abortion people in singapore....can abort up to 6 7 times...I am glad people know how to think. karma will come to them when its time...I'm like waiting for my baby to arrive...waiting game now.
Omg abort 7 times might as well sterilize herself sia. -.- My whole family is supposedly buddhist too. But guess they burn joss sticks for fun one. (replying to evangeline)

oh, you kno what, i was told to push back my working date to 3rd jan. and cos i missed out a few weeks to fufil the 90 days.
AHHHHH so i have no ML, no bonus. n my parents still insisted we shld not ROM cos of the baby. (like saying the child is the cause of me n bf problem, so dont make it to become baby's problem. ) but 4k !!!!
i just counted actually, supposed to start work 12th sept. and baby coming around nov end. i dont know if they can give in a bit.
and also, thank you so much Engel for your advises
I thought i should be able to get some subsidies also. First went to a clinic at east point, $180 plus. Then i went to parkway east, $190 plus. I realize follow ups are much cheaper than the first consult, so i've like wasted $100 on the way already? I was wondering if i can wait till my baby is old enough to sign on a package before i go for my next check up... need to save $$$. =s
And i'm having a hard to being financially prepared. I did the maths and freaked out.
If you didn't even start work at the company yet. How to cover you maternity leave and salary ? 90 days is to protect against anti selection. Meaning what if employee suddenly start work then realise eh preggie . Lol so the preggie employees purposely get preggie first then find job? Company will lose out .
