犯太岁、拜虎爷 & 打小人 ... these 3 events are very separate entities.Originally Posted by lawla12
At the every beginning of each Lunar New Year, 4 of the animal zodiacs will be identified as 犯太岁 & commencing the 1st day of the Lunar New Year, these people have the whole Lunar year to 拜太岁.
Similarly, another group of animal zodiacs will be identified as "must" 拜虎爷 ... there will also be a specific day in the Lunar first month where the tiger will officially open its mouth. Those praying will buy big pieces of belly pork to pray, in an attempt to "negotiate" with the tiger not to bite them.
Lastly, 打小人 is just a ritual to "eliminate what you deem as obstacles around you" ... including bringing your shoes to kneel before the altar & whack the paper cuttings 3 times each.
If you are mean enough (like I sometimes do), you can chant that 小人's actual name when whacking with your shoes.
I used to do all these quite regularly in a small temple in Tanjong Katong ... but since they underwent renovation works late last year, I've not had a chance to pray there yet.
As a result, when it was 观音诞 last Sun, I had to bring both my small boys to squeeze with so many other people to pray in 四马路观音庙.
