You mean folic acid, immediately..
This is a discussion on When did your doc 1st give you iron suppliments? within the First Trimester forum, part of the Pregnancy Forum category; Any advise?...
You mean folic acid, immediately..
folic acid - immed until after 1st tri
calcium, fish oil etc - after 1st tri
Sorry, I have not been very precise with my question. My doc has been prescribing me folic acid. Lately I have been getting dizzy spell. I was wondering is it bcoz my doc forgot to advise me to have iron supp. Is it normal to experience giddiness?
when i'm going to my 4th month.. was on folic for 1st 3 months
Same as Wenz, think can drink some milo if giddy , milo got iron ... Ask yr gynae if the giddy still continue..
Mia tu (dont waste more time), call and ask yr Gynae. What if it is low blood pressure??? Better be safe..

I think low blood will lead to fainting, put risk to you and baby.
actually giddy during 1st trim is quite common cos your body changes to pregnacy.. i fainted twice during my 1st trim... and my previous i fainted once during 1st trim and once during last trim...
due to our blood level lower so tend to feel giddy.. even i on iron pills also giddy sometime now...
my blood test report shows my hae level only 9.6.. which normal range is 11 - 16
but i got anemia previously so that explains my giddy and low hae level...
you guys went to gynae for the 1st check up? or GP?
i went to the GP to confirm my pregnancy and the doc says I'm very healthy and did not prescribe any supplements for me.
I'm eating my own folic acid bought from GNC. other than that, I'm eating non-stop. had put on 1+kg over 1 month
For the Iron Tablets, mine is called multi-Vitamins, after 3 months, sign the package and it is 'free flow', hee... only need to pay for Calcium and Fish Oil.
My Gynae is a female dr, my hubby likes her as he dont like me to see by Male Dr, she is patient, @ Gleneagles, Dr Lisa Chin.
continue taking folic acid until gynae stops prescribing. It should be 3 months supply. Take with milk rite?
yes its normal to feel light-headedness....during my time i felt that way always, esp if i stand too long or waiting for food at crowded places (hawkers or mcdonalds when queuing far behind)....the menu board appears crooked or 'swaying' to me though....lols....
one way is to make sure you eat a good breakfast, avoid standing for too long and avoid crowded places where oxygen supply is bad....
calcium is important during pregnancy becoz it affects you and yr baby's bone structures. be sure to have 2000g of calcium everyday at least. Last time i drink Anlene Milk everyday. I will make one thermal container of milk and bring to the office. One glass in the morning, lunchtime another, tea break another and then before sleeping another glass. If you are afraid of that funny taste can go for HL milk. Avoid Full cream milk unless you want to gain weight.
as for irons, i prefer to take from natural sources. Spinach, Kidney beans....heres a list from the internet:
Green Leafy Vegetables: Spinach, Asparagus, Broccoli, Collard Greens, Mustard Greens, Kale, Turnip Greens, Parsley, Cabbage
Certain fortied foods: Cereals, Oatmeal, Pasta, Rice, Grits
Liver, Tofu, Barley, Fish: Tuna Potato
be careful of liver though becoz it has high cholesterol. Not to be consumed too often. Also taking too much iron will cause constipation. Be sure to balance up with the required amount of dietary fibre intake. I took 6 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday during pregnancy.
I was prescribed OBIMIN as a multi-vitamins for me during 2nd trimester becoz i asked my gynae for iron tablets but he gave me that instead....hahah....but i did not take it coz i was having really bad constipation....but i find taking from natural sources will not be so badly constipated....

As for iron, I only like to eat kidney, I do not like the taste of liver.
How far are you into your pregnancy?
bhahahahhaha.....i am not pregnant!!! lols....just from memory when i had my first boy....coz i took quite good care of myself during pregnancy~
if i dont rem wrongly folic acid must take with milk.....right mummies?
Folic Acid is not a must to take with milk. It fine to just take with water.
Went to see the gynae last friday, the doc prescribed the multivitamins to me, including the calcium supplements. Then the doc was saying that I have put on too much wt. need to control my diet .
before preg, i have been cautioned not to take pills unless prescribed...
esp iron pills...
calcium pills , i have read articles where they said that it doesnt really help the body..best is from the natural source
well, for me , i did not't even know i was preg until first checkup...9 weeks ...so only one time prescription for folic acid...with the multivitamins..then second checkup, only given fish oil and multivitamins, no more folic acid.
no iron pills, calcium pills etc.
then when i attended the gestational diabetes course, the dietician told me that i should have bought calcium pills from guardians or general pharmacy as i hardly take milk... a lil of pills is better than none since i hardly take milk...yet i take cheese, yogurt, ice cream...that should be okay bah?
i was given folic acid, multi vitamins during my first checkup when pregnancy was confirmed... i was admitted to kk once due to bleeding so when i was discharged, i was given iron supplements to replenish my blood... i was told to stop my iron supplements during my second checkup was given calcium instead and pills to stablise my pregnancy together with folic acid and multi-vitamins... have tons of pills to eat every morning... haha
