Buying milk bottles

May i check with mummies how many bottles did you standby for NB?

1) I am confused with all the brands available like NUK, Avent, Dr Brown, Pigeon etc... Do i just buy 1 from different brands since i always hear the babies also have their preference?
2) What size should i buy and what type (wide neck?)
3) How many shld i get since i intend to try to bf?
4) Also is glass bottle better than plastic one?
5) Then they have BPA free? Anti Colic...

Thank you for your advice!!

Re: Buying milk bottles

I use NUK brand for my boy, as it has the Air System and prevent Anti Colic but mine is not the wide neck type, for new born, I bought 3 small one (125ml, I think), can last you 9 hours, then steam together. I dont have much breast milk, so I mix with FM.

Read around in the web, see, compare which one suit you as you are using it to yr baby before you buy.

Re: Buying milk bottles

I use avent for both my boys n seem ok.
I only both 2 small, 1 medium and 1 large.
1 small 1 for water 1 for milk.
Medium 1 for milk, water use drinking training cup.
Large 1 for milk, water use water bottle.
Too many bottles r waste.

Re: Buying milk bottles

i'm using avent... i bought 1 small bottle and 4 small ones for containing breast milk and the breast pump comes with addi 2 cover w teat.. so total 5 bottle & 3 cover/teat for dear son...

you better prepare a few bottles so you can sterilise the bottles at once after few feeds instead of sterilising the bottle after every feed..

preparing hw many bottles for breast milk depends on how much breast milk you have, and if you intend to let your baby latch etc...

initially i didnt bother if the breast milk bottle waill be wasted anot cos even if i dont have much breast milk, the bottles i can always use it to contain other things like biscuits etc... hehe...

Re: Buying milk bottles

I have 3 different brands of bottles:

- AVENT BPA-free ones in 125ml and 250ml given by friends and my mum
- NUK glass bottles with orthodontic teats
- Medela BPA-free bottles for breast milk (all Medela pdts use BPA-free plastic)

My personal opinion is go for Medela (if you intend to BF) and NUK because their teats and bottles can be used inter-changeably ie. NUK teats fit Medela bottles and vice versa. More convenient for you in the long run.
Whereas AVENT has its own sizing so other brands cannot fit.

Re: Buying milk bottles

Thanks all mummies for sharing and explaining... i didnt know that some brands' teats are interchangable!!
think i will prb get a few small ones to standby.. i dont want to be sterilising all the time!!
Oh, do we need to differentiate which bottle is for water and which bottle is for milk?

Re: Buying milk bottles

Stan, if you are breastfeeding and giving yr baby expressed breast milk you dont have to feed him/her water because yr foremilk will have water and lactose.

If you are giving formula feeds then need to give like 2-3 suckles of water after every feed.
Most people dont seperate the bottles if they are washed and cleaned thoroughly.

Re: Buying milk bottles

This is a feedback from one of my colleague - Advent milk bottle wasn’t that good. Her bad experience was that the milk bottle got cracks and started leaking after several use. She heat up the milk from the microwave, although the bottle stated can be microwave.

She uses Pigeon brand, from Japan and so far was ok. Anyone experienced similar issue?

Re: Buying milk bottles

I'm feeding expressed breast milk to my girl. Using avent bottles.

Prepared 5nos of 125ml bottles & 5nos of 260ml bottles. Let my girl tried medela but she will choke on the teats as she doesn't know how deep to suck. Whereas avent has the round part to guide her n stop her from taking in too deep.

Re: Buying milk bottles

you're not advise to microwave breast milk as it will 'burnt' the tongue of the baby. either stand the bottle in hot water, test it with the wrist before feeding baby with it or use a food & drink warmer

Re: Buying milk bottles

I used Avent 3 bottles each (4oz & 9 oz). it is much easier to use a bigger mouth bottle especially when pouring power into it, it make it much easier. I will never advise to microwave any milk bottle, plastic is still plastic whether or not they say can do so. anyway recently I started to change the 9oz bottle to Pureen not bad too.

Re: Buying milk bottles

I bought Avent ones for both my elder kids and have bought the same brand for upcoming baby. So far, no probs with my elder kids, have stick to this brand and upgraded to bigger bottles over the years.

For newborn, I have traditionally bought at least 5 bottles as I hate to sterilise immediately after use. At least with 5, I can sterilise once or max twice a day, where required. By the way, I also breastfeed but I prefer to feed via bottle so that I can rest over the night and hubby/mum can help to feed. Also, I want to know how much milk is baby drinking and I do not want the caregiver to have a hard time feeding the baby when I return to work.

Feeding breast milk via bottle is a good idea to gauge the amount consumed by baby!
i intend to try to bf but i guess have to standby a tin of FM for NB just in case? or the hospital will give me samples of FM when going home?

Just wanna know when we buy the milk bottles, do they come with the teats? Or we have to buy seperately. Also do we need to buy extra teats?

If you buy newborn starter kits, they usually come with teats. Bottles normally come with teats as well BUT you may have to buy a variety of teats to see which one your baby prefers.

I think it's best to buy extra teats as backup. But I'm quite KS .

Initially, I bought the NUK glass bottles for my baby (BPA free ones are expensive and you dont't know if 10-20yrs from now, whether there will be some research saying even BPA free plastics are no good). Those bottles come with NUK teats. Subsequently, I found Farlin glass bottles that are much cheaper (around $5 each). Those come with teats too but I dont't use them as my baby is used to the NUK teats which are good. So I will buy NUK teats separately. But remember, teats need to be changed every 3-4 months (especially if you are bottle-feeding full time). As for whether or not to buy extra, so far I dont't find the need to because I have about 6 bottles (all with teats) for my one baby. If one teat tears or anything, I have the other 5 to use while I go buy new ones when I am free. But there is one occasion when there was a sale on NUK teats and I bought the next stage one (for > 6 months) to standby for my baby.

Thank you for your advice!!

get the bpa free ones, cos baby plastic pdts got a lot of bpa, and bpa can cause cell changes in the human body...

or you can just buy a glass bottle.

the anti colic one i dont't really think is useful...

glass bottle will break, plastic ones won't...

if total breastfeed, actually dont't need bottles what.

you mean for when you go back to work?

Min is 3: 1 use, 2 washed and sterilised.

expressed milk better to use milk bags, rather than bottles.

I am using the AVENT bottles, bought 2 of the 4oz bottles.
There are different teats for different age, i did not even notice till my Confinement lady told me.

As for drinking water, i bought a super small bottle from Pigeon with the wording "i luv Daddy & Mummy"...very cute!

Re: Buying milk bottles

shld choose one you r comfy with.
baby cant choose unless you let them have a choice to.
if you start with one brand, stick with it. then baby wont have the chance to choose another brand.

i think plastic is still safer than glass, cos wont break.
if you r BF-ing then prob just get about 2-3?
for anti colic ones, they will state, just keep a lookout.

Re: Buying milk bottles

Just to clarify. BPA is a kind of plastic. It had been tested to pass out chemicals that act like synthetic hormones in our bodies after several uses. Such chemicals have been researched to cause fertility problems, thyroid problems, weight problems and in some cases, increase probability of cancer.

We're kinda the generation that grew up on BPA plastic products which is why you hear a lot of people getting cancer and fertility problems.

Obviously, glass would be the best milk bottle material to get. But some feel that they're too heavy and breakable. There are pros and cons.

I'm sad to report that I'm not using glass bottles. Just before my son was born, the BPA thing hadn't gotten big yet so glass bottles were almost impossible to find. Unless you have the $$ to order and import from US websites. I went and got AVENT bottles and breast pump. Now can't change cos you know AVENT dont't quite fit other brands. (Their bottles are fatter than other brands.)

If you have bought any bottles yet, I suggest you go for the glass ones.

dont buy any to stand by.. The hospital will give you some samples and ready made formula if you request. Stand by more FM at home means you have an excuse to let dear husband or anyone else scare you, by saying you not enuff milk. that time i got like 8 bottles of FM samples.. till date I still have 1 bottle, cos i used a few tins of FM. Luckily dear husband and both our parents support BFing. So am still bfing.
