Any pregnant mother keeping pet rodent,hamster/guinea pigs?
Recently i found one article CDC - LCMV and Pregnancy, Infections - NCBDDD
They mentioned hamsters can actually transmit virus to human, and then pass onto the unborn babies causing defects or even miscarriage.
So should i give away my hamsters? so sad. i've been keeping them for 1 years plus!
as long as you keep your pets clean, i dont see any pro at all. dont give them away. =)
Hi, I understand your worries. I had my hamsters for over a year too, before I became pregnant with my first daughter. What I did was to buy those disposable plastic gloves (the kind food handlers use) and wear them when handling the hamsters and changing their cages. Afterwards just wash your hands thoroughly as an extra precaution.
I had a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby! I also continued to handle my hamsters, change their cages etc after my girl was born, no problem. My hammies eventually died of old age last year... so I'll say its not necessary to give your pets away if you really love them. Just be more careful, that's all...
Btw you can find those gloves at the disposable cutlery section of NTUC etc. Its only 1-2 bucks per pack of 100 gloves, so very cheap and gives you peace of mind when handling pets and clearing the cage.
hope that helps!
i'm still feeding stray cats especially one which was pregnant and now have baby kittens ..
I have 6 gerbils....and still playing with them..its the cat poop that is dangerous....in my 36th week and baby is growing PERFECTLY WELL.
Thanks for your replies.
I love my 4 hammies, i dont't bear to give them away...
I'll use gloves when handling their cages, and will keep the cages clean more often.
