Personally I wouldn't bother. I did try with my son when he was three months and that was a huge mistake. I gave up after 3 weeks and read up about attachment parenting. Everything that I had been raised to believe about parenting went out the door instantly. From then on I breastfed or rocked my baby boy to sleep. I do the same for my 11 month old girl now who I'm breastfeeding to sleep.
Now at 2, nearly 3 years old he is learning to self settle for his nap. Night sleep he still needs one of us to be with him. Yes he is late compared to babies who were taught to self settle, but I dont't regret it one bit.
It can be tiring but it is worth it because it teaches my kids that I am there for them and to help them, they will not be expected to do something that isn't really possible for babies their age. They are babies and only for a short time.
