This is a discussion on how to let baby gain weight fast yet healthily? within the Newborn Baby and Infant Care (up to 12 months old) forum, part of the Growing Up & Parenting category; my boy was pretty small at birth (2.8kg). now at 10weeks, he's about 5+kg. pediatrician says he is gaining weight ...
my boy was pretty small at birth (2.8kg). now at 10weeks, he's about 5+kg. pediatrician says he is gaining weight averagely bt his body n limbs are still quite "thin" looking. lotsa pple comment that he is small compared to BBs of his age who are weighing averagely 6kg-7kg.. im trying to put more weight n "cubbiness" on him..im currently doing exclusive BF bt ss is depleting. will alternate FM feeding helps? sleeping patterns and massaging help too? what other ways can i adopt...?
Different people, different development n growth. If the paed says he's fine and growing well, then dont't worry too much.
The rough guide is to triple birth wt by 12 month old. Your son is actually on track since he'd already double his birth wt by 2.5 mths.
fat is not healthy. obesity in babies is getting serious.. experts have no idea how they get to this point.. but its going to be hard to shed that extra weight for them and will impact their development..
your baby seems like he's growing fine.. my daughter had the same birth weight and at 10 weeks, weighing 5+kg is really good. he has already nearly doubled his birth weight.
I think your baby weight is fine , My baby weigh 5.3kg at 2 month + she is only 2.7 kg at birth .. As long as she is drinking her milk , have wet diapers its fine , since your doc also say fine already dont't think too much
not sure whether my baby is adnormal or what..as shes 6.8kg at 3mths+ now and demands 150ml each 4hr feed
thank you mummies for the assurance. im under pressure from the oldies askin why is baby still so small... thatz why felt that baby is not on track. moreover, they say baby is a boy, should b heavier.
How heavy your boy is, is dependent on genes as well, not just food. Your boy is born at 2.8kg, mine is born at 2.3kg. At 10 weeks, yours is 5kg+, mine is only 5kg+ at 5mths (20 weeks). Now at 16 mths, he is 8.5kg.
My point is as long as your boy is eating a balanced meal, with enough fluids, reaching developmental milestones, why bother about what people say? You pressurize yourself, and you end up pressurizing your son when it comes to meal times. That might be counter effective for you and make meal times stressful and totally unenjoyable, and then your son will eat less and thus defeating your initial purpose/intention.
If you and your hubby is not big sized, you can't expect your son to be big.
As long as your son's growth is not lower than 3 percentile, he is doing fine.
i think your baby's weight gain is very good! average weight gain is around 800g - 1kilo per month during the 1st 6mth. iirc, dear son was around 6kilo when he was 2mths. his birth weight was 2.9kilo. pediatrician said his weight gain was very fast, so i assume that your baby's weight gain is perfectly normal.
Agree with diymummy and thepinkdot.
I can't seem to get my head around it but most people here, especially the older generation, feel that a baby must be super fat and chubby in order to be seen as healthy. This is so wrong. Being overweight and too fat applies to babies as well! Sometimes I think babies here are overfed to the point of being stuffed like Christmas turkeys. I know of one parent who stuffs her baby with 200ml of FM every 3 hours. That's nearly an adult serving of a glass of milk! :x
For me, being healthy and active is more important than the number of Michelin tyres they have.
Having said that, Eva's birth weight was 2.76 kg and at 10 weeks, she was double her birth weight but around the 25 percentile group - pretty low compared to a lot of the babies here. Now at 9 mths old, she's around 7.5 kg. Sometimes I get comments that she's small for her age but it doesn't bother me coz she's healthy, happy and active. She has all the time in the world in the future to worry about her appearance (and weight). I'm not going to start on it now.

Every baby is an individual, so stuffing them like X'mas turkeys or not, as long as they grow healthy and growing well. It's all that matters.
i believe each individual baby has their own needs and wants so its hard to judge whether parents are stuffing more or less of food into the baby.
if your baby wants to be fed its perfectly fine, no point forcing them to eat more just coz they dunn look chubby or they look smaller then other babies.....
Baber was nebber a chubby baby, he lost his baby fats after about 1 yo and everyone comments hes slim and thin............
actually everyone will not stop talking about our babies, be it fat or thin. Too fat = pple comment, too thin = pple also comment, just nice = pple also comment lOlzzzzzzzzzzzz
its nonstop process lOlzzzzzz
So end of the day, healthy, happy and alert baby is all we hoped for ~~~no need to compare
i 4got to add, Baber is chubby on the face only, his hands and legs are thin thin one lOlzzzzz
see his growing up diary~~~
ya.. as long they are drkg/eating well.. i think its prefectly fine..
graham also very lean.. he still can wear 3mths btmz.. but he drks about 170ml milk 2.5-3Hr.. w 1 meal of porridge in the afternn..
some babies very individual 1.. some follow parents genes.. i got a friend baby elder graham by 9days is 10kg+ when graham is 7+kg
hmm, i always complain pin is too fat/chubby.
now you want them to be fat/chubby, but when they grow older n older, you will want them to be slim n fit..
as long growing well n healthy, why does it matter they r chubby or slim?
wont be surprised 10 yrs later someone will post here, HOW TO LET MY CHILD LOSE WEIGHT??
Actually i think is ok... so no need to worry... my boy now 2 months plus.. weight about 5.2kg... but people also say he very thin... but i think because my boy is tall... long leg... no sure wont look as chubby... as long as he drink well.. i think not a problem... just dont't care what others say...
My baby is 9 weeks now..and she is only 4.2 kg..
but i am not too worry ..she is small size..cos me and hubby also small size type..and doctor said she is ok..
anyway..she was born premature at 2.2 kg only..so i think 4.2 kg is good enough for her..
i also dont want her to be obese..and she is on total breastfeeding too..no formula at all.
it's really comforting to see d replies...tk you mummies...
dear apollo, your baby really gain weigh fast.. was he on FM or breast milk?
some oldies told me that baby on breast milk will not grow fats...not sure if it's true
ehhh actually breast milk is still the best. those oldies say 'will not grow' cos most BF baby are not very fat.. but to me, i feel that what's more impt is to give them as much breast milk as possible cos IT IS HEALTHY, not becos it will fatten up the baby anot. you can fatten up your baby anytime but breast milk is very impt during their 1st few mths.
so now, ask yourself, is baby chubby more impt, or healthy more impt.
dont't be discouraged by their ignorant remarks. Breast milk is the BEST milk you can ever give to your child!!! You should continue
When your child has a good foundation set, it will be easier to build on it in future, rather than trying to correct wrong habits.
