This is a discussion on climbing on playpen and playard within the Toddlers and Preschoolers (1-5 years old) forum, part of the Singapore Kiasu Parents Forum category; mummies and daddies. How do I stopped my son from climbing the play pen and playard, he nearly fell over ...
mummies and daddies.
How do I stopped my son from climbing the play pen and playard, he nearly fell over the other time (he was pulling himself up to the waist area already to get out of the playpen), good thing I was there fast enough to catch him.
When we tell him no, he still do it, we tried distracting him when he wants to climb but after awhile he is trying to climb again

i think its diff to ask him to stop right now. cuz he still dont really understand that its dangerous. when my dear son was 1 yr old also like that. even when i reduce the playpen to its lowest he'll still try to climb, so i got no choice but to not put him in the playpen unless someone is looking after him. other than that if i'm going to bath, i'll put him on the hair chair strap him tight and leave him outside the toliet.
get something to occupy him. give him toys. if not funny things for him to play. i keep talking to him and make him laugh, sing to him while i was bathing.
Suggest dont let your dear son sleep in the playpen. Switch to mattress and let him sleep on the floor. Or train him to sleep on the bed. But the bed put it at the side ( either left or right) against the wall. And put a extra matthress on the floor ( either left or right) in case he fall off.
then maybe you should let him come out to run around and explore the house. but be sure that keep all dangerous things out of his reach and all tables edges are not sharp.
Actually depend on his mood also, he is tired, he will just sit inside and lie down, if he is not and he see us eating, he wants and if we ignore him, he make noise and try climbing again ....haizzzz
children are like that one. gotta be patient . they are just curious and wants lotsa attention. if you are worried then last time what i did was, sleeping time he slps on mattress. the playpen is in the living room. so watever i do i can see him.
now he in this stage you already buay ta han, next time, you'll have more headache. mine is 4 now, i'm so afraid of losing him in shopping centres, cuz he'll anyhow run. and when he was bout 2 half yrs old, he will just anyhow run n will even try to dash across the road. they still dont know what is dangerous and what's not. so as parents we'll have to be very careful n patient in teaching them.
I was actually entertaining the idea of custom build a stainless steel type of playpen which is high enough for him not to climb up and wide enough to place a play pen size mattress in with 4 castor wheels to make it portable for pushing around when required.
Told my wife and she laugh, told me it is a bad idea, she akin it to me fencing my dogs up
got a spare room? if yes, just childproof it and let him inside.
i am going to have the same headache soon too, cos my 9mth old can climb out of his feeding chair (although i have strap him in) and also tries to step on top of his toys in the play pen to 'reach higher heights' and starts jumping on top!
oh.. well just be extra careful. and if your dear son happens to fall, dont blame yourself. its part n parcels of growing up. as long as its not some serious thingy. my dear son used to fall all the time. they say you never grow up unless you fall.
he fell a few times already, walk until so tired and then just collapse like his legs are jelly

so cute! haha.. mine also.. skinny skinny one. worst. look like he'll fracture some where whenever he falls. haha~
what i did was i will wave a cane at him or spank him on his legs to warn him that it is a dangerous move or scold him upside down. Got to be pretty stern just once and the message will be drilled into them permanently.
