My son is two months old and I'm already thinking of what primary school I want to send him to. That's because I've heard that you must either: 1. do volunteer work in the school 2. be an alumni of the school (not possible for me cos I went to a girls' school) 3. live within 1 km of the school.
How soon do you start working towards getting your son/daughter into the school of your choice? What makes you choose the school you did or are going to?
If you intend to send him to a SHHK school, and you/hub is Hokkien, you should do so NOW and be active in their activities cos it may play a part when it comes to recommendation for Phase 2B.
If you intend to go via PV, you can start applying the year your child turns 3yo.
If you intend to go via staying 1km to the school, you must plan finances and look for new house soon. Also, need to consider the risk cos for certain very popular schools, you may not get in though you stay next to the school.
And, agree with Daddy D, before you worry about Pri school, pre-school is more impt. No point getting into top school in SG but went to lousy preschool which did not prepare your child well for the stress and rigour in top primary school.
Empty vessels make the most noise
I'm also wondering about that...it seems there's a bewildering range of playgroups, pre-nurseries, nurseries, kindergartens and enrichment classes out there and I dont't know which ones are good. The ones with Montessori in their name aren't necessarily Montessori-certified. Any good ones near Vivocity? I'm considering Julia Gabriel, Lorna Whiston, Chiltern House, Gymboree...the usual ones. Any good ones I have not't mentioned?
What does SHHK and PV stand for?
I have no idea about Gymboree's age for students. Guess I'll have to check those out.
I wonder if there are any of these near VivoCity.
And, those little pre-schools that aren't "branded"...you know, those using a house as their school. I wonder if these will be good?
camom, is Chiltern House's program different from Julia Gabriel's mainstream school then?
I've planned for my son's pri school which is less than 1km from my current place. but of cos if its fails due to popularity we wld move on to our 2nd choice which isnt that bad either.. he's now in the playdays morning prog after we stopped julia n gabriel due to timing n distance for us n then once he turns 3 we'll b moving him to pre school which we have decided on that too.. never too early to plan
Take note that being parent volunteer in the pri sch may not help get your child a place in the sch. Best to check with the sch first. We teachers talk about it all the time. dont't spend a few years doing PV work for a sch then get angry later that your child didn't get into the sch.
What does PV includes? I am applying to do PV work and I need to fill in the services that I can offer. In the first place I dont even know what are the services available Anyone can enlighten me? TIA!
