Re: When to teach baby how to write?

I started teaching my boy once he showed interst in pens & pencils. Taught him to hold properly first and allowed him to doodle. Then let him do tracing of pictures and colouring. around 2.5yo he started to write alphabets & numbers through observation although some strokes are incorrect. Then we started to show him the correct strokes. He can write all alphabets now in small & caps. Can write number 0-9. but handwriting not very neat but good enough. He just turned 3yo 2 wks ago.

I bought this little tikes doodle board w sound.
It comes with a thick pen which is handy for young kids.
If you press the pen tip harder, there are engine or other car sounds.

My baby's only 9+ month. She is showing some interest in the drawings. She'll try to hold the pen & stab at the board or mouth it.

I didn't plan to teach writing this early. I was looking for car toy to entertain her. Now I also write some ABCs, of course.
We also draw her favourite Elmo. Now the toy's in the house. I like it cos it's so versatile.

I suppose you are asking about fine motor skills for a baby or toddler, right?
Most kids learn to doodle or colour with crayons. Writing skills means printing letters or numbers with pencil. First, the kid has to know his ABCs... Toddlers just scribble/doodle for fun.

I started the montessori way, using fingers to trace sandpaper letters and fat crayons to doodle. I usually tape a piece of mahjong paper or brown paper on the floor and let the child doodle what he/she wants. So far, both my kids started to show interest in doodling when they were about 15-16 mths old.

When we go out, a fat pen or pencil is a must bring too. Can occupy the toddler when we are having our meals.
