My mother tongue also cantonese. I speak to my family in cantonese and my boys also can understand what I tell them. I'll let nature take it's course..they will get to learn more languages when they grow older and making more friends of different dialect groups.
i ask my in-laws to speak to my boy in cantonese. 'cause they r m'sians, got the chinese accent which i dont want my boy to pick up. the rest of us speak to him in english. dont know chinese how. 'cause my husband cant speak proper chinese. except me. mayb when he's older. i'll speak to him in chinese.
i'll allow and teach my kids dialect too... its good to know more... if not will be like me, being a cantonese i can speak cantonese but can understand... my hubby is khek but i dont understand a single words so even if his parent say my bad things i also dont know... i only know how to speak hokkien... cos my mum is hokkien and she taught me when i was young... so i dont want my kids to be like me... i want them to know cantonese, hokkien and khek at least... keke
haha i will allow him to learn, of course the good 1, not those XXX words. Hmmm more exposure surely you wish to let him understand what the old ppl are saying and he will also enjoy shows or songs if any when he is older.
Prob at their own pace ... cos mother in law and some relatives talk in dialects, me and hubby in Chinese and English and maid in Tagalog..
