PRESIDENT and chief executive officer (CEO) of Ascendas Chong Siak Ching has been appointed by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) as an independent board director, from Friday.

Ascendas specialises in developing, managing and marketing IT, science, business, industrial and logistics parks, hi-tech facilities, office and retail space with presence in 10 countries across Asia including Singapore, China, India and Korea.

The 2009 Singapore Business Awards' Outstanding CEO of the Year also sits on the boards of Ascendas and its subsidiaries, and is the deputy chairman of Spring Singapore and chairman of International Enterprise Singapore's Network India Steering Committee.

Ms Chong, who was also deputy CEO of JTC, brings in-depth knowledge of the regional real estate market and extensive experience in business space management to SPH, said a statement from the media group on Friday.

SPH Chairman Dr Tony Tan, welcoming Ms Chong as a new member, said: "With her experience and qualifications, she is eminently qualified to contribute to the Board and the Company's growth."

Ms Chong holds a Bachelor of Estate Management (Honours), a Masters in Business Administration from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and has completed the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School. She is registered as a licensed valuer and is currently a Council Member of the Singapore Business Federation.

She was also conferred the NUS Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2009, and the NUS Distinguished Alumni Award by the Faculty of Architecture and Building Management in 1999.
