BRANCHES from at least 20 trees in the Serangoon North area came crashing down after a brief thunderstorm yesterday, damaging eight cars, three of them seriously.

The downpour in the late afternoon also caused several tree branches to fall in areas such as Hougang and Ang Mo Kio, littering the pavements and roads.

The National Parks Board (NParks) said the fallen branches along Yio Chu Kang Road had damaged a bus, and roofs and fences of two properties.

Around 6.30pm last night, NParks' contractors were seen along Yio Chu Kang Road sawing off heavy branches that had snapped but not fallen. Others were seen clearing debris from the ground.

The National Environment Agency said yesterday's windspeeds and rainfall were not unusual. The highest one-hour rainfall recorded was 20.2mm, at Marine Parade in the afternoon.
