A TOTAL of 2,377 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes and 40 packets of shag tobacco have been seized from a barge and tugboat at Jurong Wharf.

The illegal haul was found during a routine joint inspection by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) Anti-Smuggling Team and Police Coast Guard (PCG).

The items, hidden in a manhole on board the vessels, have a combined value of $456,900.

Three crew members, including the 44-year-old barge master, were handed over to the Singapore Customs (SC) for further investigation.

Those who are caught importing uncustomed goods can be fined up to 20 times the amount of duty evaded and jailed up to three years.
