AFTER 40 years, the President of Jamiyah is calling it a day.
Haji Abu Bakar Maidin, 83, was the guest of honour at a lunch thrown for him on Sunday, at the close of an era of his leadership of one of the most active social-service and religious organisations here.
The event, held at the Malay Heritage Centre in Kampong Glam, had a guest list headed by the Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim, who is also minister for the Environment and Water Resources.
The other 100 guests included the Speaker of Parliament Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, President of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis), the chief executive of Mendaki Moliah Hashim, the mufti of Singapore Saihabus Sama Haji Syed Isa Semait, and leaders of various community groups.
Dr Yaacob, in his tribute to Mr Abu Bakar, described the prominent community leader as someone with vision who lay the foundation for the Malay/Muslim community to seize opportunities to excel and develop.
'Contributions such as his should be documented and made known to our young,' he said.
