JOHOR BARU - THE overall crime index in the city has dropped by 24.5 per cent but more needs to be done to shed Johor Baru's crime-prone image.

Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said although crime had generally dropped, it was a challenge to rid the city of the stigma.

'We are located close to other countries and sometimes their media labels Johor Baru as an unsafe city,' he said during an official visit to the Johor Baru South police district headquarters on Sunday.

He said the only way to counter it was to continue lowering the crime index.
'The police have already done a good job by lowering street crime by a massive 54.8 per cent and this surpasses the National Key Result Area (NKRA) target,'' he added.

Datuk Ghani said the Johor Baru South police district had been given 206 more men for various duties.
