THE daughter of the late senior minister of state for education, Dr Tay Eng Soon, is one of 64 principals appointed this year.

Mrs Lucy Toh, 39, will head St Andrew's Secondary from January, and said she is 'excited' about her new post.

The mother of three boys aged four to six, said: 'I've always enjoyed teaching boys. They are very straightforward, once you've won their respect, they are very loyal to you. They are also risk-takers.'

She has worked in the Education Ministry's headquarters since 2005 in its curriculum planning and development division before joining the personnel division in 2007, where she stayed until this year. Now, she is looking forward to returning to school.

'The staff have been very inspiring, very game to try anything that will grow our boys. Being surrounded by the kids keeps you going,' said Mrs Toh, who joined St Andrew's as vice-principal over a month ago.

She said the teachers have already observed similarities between herself and her predecessor, Mrs Belinda Charles - they are both people-oriented and former heads of English. Mrs Charles, 60, will be retiring this year.
