SYDNEY - QANTAS chief Alan Joyce on Saturday said he was not worried about the safety of the airline's 747 fleet following an engine failure on a plane shortly after it took off from Singapore.

Mr Joyce said 'smoke and sparks' came from engine on the flight that landed safely in Singapore late on Friday, but the incident was a 'contained engine failure'.

'We are not concerned about our 747 fleet,' Mr Joyce said in Sydney.
'Those engines have a long life... We've seen in-flight shutdowns take place before... It's a liability not a safety issue.'
