RETAIL sales rose 2.2 per cent in August from July.

Compared to a year ago, sales fell 1.2 per cent. Excluding motor vehicles, retailers reported 6.2 per cent more in takings from the same period last year, according to data released by the Department of Statistics on Friday.

On a monthly seasonally adjusted basis, sales of telecommunications apparatus and computers, and motor vehicles grew by 19.3 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively in August over July.

From a year ago, sales of motor vehicles fell 25.8 per cent in August.
