A COUPLE who parked their pickup truck on a set of railroad tracks before falling asleep inside escaped serious injury when a train hit their vehicle, police in Fort Worth, Texas, said today.

A southbound Union Pacific saw the truck on the tracks shortly after 2am local time and managed to slow down.

Despite the blare of the train's horn the couple inside did not wake up.

It was only when the slowly moving train struck the pickup and pushed it several hundred yards down the tracks that the man woke up, jumped out of the vehicle, and ran away.

The woman stayed in the truck, but was not seriously injured.

Officers later caught up with the man and charged him with public intoxication and evasion.

No one on the freight train was injured.
