I need advice!!
My baby is 6 days old. I am already having cracked nipples. and after she suck on my right breast i see blood on the hanky. then i squeeze my breast the wipe the milk it is slightly pinkish.
applying breastmilk and airing doesnt seem to help much.
what should i do? and also, is my baby safe from drinking blood stained milk?
was told by the lactation nurse during anenatal classes that it is safe for baby to drink blood stained milk but majority people will still want to discard the milk. its really your choice. as for cracked nipples, i highly recommend you to try medela purelan nipple cream. it is very effective when come to healing plus it is edible for the baby. i myself however always wipe it off before i feed my baby.
Thanks for the advices!
M&M, why do you clean off the cream before you breast feed?
hi, i do experience sore and crack nipples that bleed during my 1st week of bf... i apply cream and milk still it hurts and make feeding diff so i ended up pumping most of the time and only let my latch my baby once/twice a day while i endure the pain...
but after 1 week of suffering, everything seems to be better from the 2nd week onwards as my nipple not so painful anymore and seems to adapt to feeding...
Hi, I encountered the same problem as you while pumping out milk ytd. The milk that came out was reddish. Got a big shock cos I m not sure if I should contd expressing. If I dont express, my breast will be engorged. But, its bleeding.
What I did:
1. Stop expressing or feeding from that bleeding nipple for now.
2. I used ice to soothe the bleeding nipple. (I dont have the medela cream at home so cldnt apply). This helps!
3. When its time for the next feed again, I pump with a lower suction force. I need to get the milk out so gotta pump again.
My nipple is slightly better now. So far, no bleeding again (kiping fingers x)
For your reference
same as wenz. i have the habit to clean off the cream before feeding. Firstly i do not want my baby to consume too much of it even though it is edible. Secondly i want to make sure my milk holes are not block so baby can be fed properly. even when not applying the cream, i still have the habit of cleaning my nipple before feeding and i use my baby's hanky to gently scrub it during warm shower occassionally. i mean when nipple is 'healthy'. remember only to clean nipple with water. do not apply soap to wash nipple as it will take away the protective oil and thus drying your nipple leading to cracks.
Yes, your baby is safe drinking blood-stained milk. I also had very painful and cracked nipples when I started bfding and I tried applying my breast milk and also Medela Purelan but I can tell you that it will take some time to heal coz you're still constantly latching/pumping so it's a bit difficult to heal very quickly. Just persevere and put up with the pain for now and think positively!
i've stared using purelan and i'd say its really good!
now my routine is i pump out my breast milk during the day and let my CL feed my baby, then at night i will let her latch on (about 3 times each night)
so far so good. it still hurts when i latch her on, but only the initially few suckle is painful. afterwhich is ok. and so far stop bleeding already.
really grateful for all the advices here!!
cheers to breastfeeding!
