hi, do you ladies take any supplement/vitamin while breastfeeding?? is it necessary to take them?? if yes what supplement are you all taking?
I took. Accordingly to my gynae, yes. we should. when we bf, our calcium depletes really fast. He recommended to take supplements just like pregnant days.
But , i hate prenatal multi-vitamins. im taking calcium every night.
i am taking same supplements like in pregnancy (calcium, multi vit and fish oil) as told by gynae...
I'm taking multivit, calcium and lecithin because I noticed that if I dont't take these, I either get very tired OR my issue with blocked milk ducts comes back. :/
yes... yes... its a must...
we will never have enough nutrition thru our daily food...
i am having Nutrilite protein, multi vitamins, B complex, Bio C Plus, Multi Carotene, Calcium Magnesium, Salmon Omega.
I'm taking the BlackMores - Pregnancy and breast feeding gold, is it enough??? thought of having calcium too.. what brand is good??
ok, i guess i'll just continue what i'm taking now?? fish oil, obimin and calcium??
People in Japan (those living in outskirts) do not eat supplements but still live to ripe old ages. Why? Because their diet is very good. They have large variety of fruits & vegetables in their diet plus they exercise regularly.
Nutrilite is from Amway right?
I'm sorry but I have very bad impression of Amway because of irresponsible selling that I've witnessed many times.
They do not have basic nutrition knowledge & go around recommending supplements to ill people & cause them to be more ill. A few of my parent's friends eventually died from overdose of supplements.
Supplements are necessary for some people, but the dosage & type of supplement has to be carefully looked into depending on your health conditions. Especially if you have existing illnesses.
Also, breastfeeding mummies should be careful about the supplements they choose as it can be transferred into breast milk which is ingested by your babies. Prenatal supplements are quite safe (Vit A level is not very high).
Calcium tablets are good but better if you can take fresh milk or soy milk instead. Some calcium tablets are not bioavailable. Means not easily absorbed & used by our body, so taking alot may not help also. Calcium found naturally in foods have better bioavailability. If calcium tablets are more convenient, get those made from eggshells. There's a brand call "Os-Cal" if I recall correctly, it's made from ostrich egg shells. If you want to save money, you can wash our normal chicken eggshells with hot water, dry & pound into powder. Add into your drinks or food. Free calcium & good bioavailablity.
Empty vessels make the most noise
Yes, agree with stonston.
A lot of people in Asia make the assumption that supplements is a must. In fact, it's not. I didn't take any when I was pregnant - not even folic acid. I got a lot of what I needed from natural sources (oranges contain high amounts of folic acid, bananas for potassium, salmon for fish oil, etc).
I'm taking lecithin because it helps with my blocked milk duct issue and since I dont't really have the time/energy to cook every day, multivits helps to ensure that I get what I need in order to BF. Even then, I dont't take them every day - multivits are every two to three days and calcium is once a week. I'm stopping the multivits and calcium soon - just finishing up the bottles and only choosing to continue with lecithin coz I noticed that when I stop, I can easily get blocked ducts.
Just make sure you are taking what you really need (like if you're lactose intolerant, ok, take calcium and magnesium (they go hand in hand)). I actually know of people who take special supplements for Vit D! Hello, you get your recommended daily amount from being in the sun for just 10 mins!

IMHO, no need. But urm, dont't forget to include some foods high in iron like red meat and such.
