    Choking/Coughing while suckling

My 2 wks old baby boy chokes and coughs while latching on to my breast. He is swallowing and suckling well but still chokes&coughs after a few seconds of suckling.. Why is that so? at times, he vomits out milk shortly after a feed.. is it becos i let him lie down straight after his feed?

I suppose so.. You must wind him first after every breast feed. Let him burp.

You may have a strong letdown so when the milk gushes out your young baby may not be able to cope with the fast flow hence the choking and coughing. My dear daughter used to be like that when she was young. It lasted all the way till almost 4 months old. It also happens after a few seconds of suckling for me as that's all it takes to stimulate the first letdown. When your son will stop choking depends on how fast your flow is and also how fast your son can cope with the flow. dont need to worry too much. Just take your son off your breast till the letdown is over then place him back on after that. During letdown, my breasts will be shooting milk out so i'd also have to use a cloth to cover em coz milk will usually end up all over dear daughter's face, so you may wanna do that too.

With regard to regurgitating, it's quite common for young babies to regurgitate after a milk feed or even long after one. Maybe you can try to carry him awhile longer before putting him down to rest. That worked for my dear daughter too. Doc said babies' stomachs are very small and shallow so any small movement may cause them to regurgitate a bit.

Thanks for sharing Snowbear, I'm now feel better that I'm not alone, cos I thought my baby can't take my breast milk that makes she vomits almost every feed, sometime small amount and sometime large.

my baby has a prob with the letdown too. I used to think that she didn't want any more milk so didn't try to latch her back again. Silly mummy!

It was only when i saw that the milk was shooting out when she latched off coughing that I realised that the milk was flowing too fast for her. The milk hit baby in the eye and boy, was baby really irritated!
