    dilemma!

i've been coughing for many weeks, on and off... it gets better but never fully recover... went to a few GP and they said cos i'm still bf-ing, so there are lotsa medi i cant take.

and recently dear son is down with cough and ytd till now also cough though he has recovered from the previous one.

i've thought of giving up bf-ing, take the necessary medication so that i will not pass any virus to dear son anymore... but breast milk is still the best...

i'm wondering if i can take the necessary medication, even it is NOT suitable for bf-ing but will cure my cough and i pump out the milk for that few days and throw them away instead of giving them to dear son?? 3days AFTER i finish medication, then i continue to give him my breast milk. by the time the breast milk should not hav any medication alrdy, am i right??

    any mummies did that before??

pls guide me of what i can do!!! Thanks =)

    Re: dilemma!

That time when i was sick, the doc suggested that if the antibiotic i was taking still cannot cure me he'd have to give me a stronger antibiotic that's not suitable for bfding. He said that if i take that med, I'd have to stop bfding for those few days and after that can continue to bf. Anyway, in the end i got well so dont need the stronger antibiotic. Phew!

Since your dear son is on partial bfding it's easier for you to just give him full formula for those few days you take medication. Just pump out for those few days to maintain supply (throw the mlk away). Get well soon!

Actually, I feel you should breastfeed when you're sick as your breast milk will contain antibodies that will protect your baby against whatever you caught, especially important when your baby is less than 6 months old.

If you're concerned about passing your virus to your baby, why dont't you wear a mask and use hand sterilisers?

i know... all the while i've been doing this but now the problem is, if i bf, there's limited medi that i can take. GP has prescribed me all the medi which is safe for bf-ing but my cough still cant subside totally.thus the only way now is to take the necessary medication, allows my cough to fully recover so my dear son's cough will not be wosen...

i just went to my family doc, he gave me a better medication. i told him that i'll pump and throw away the milk until i stop medication, about 3-4 days. he said can...

now my main concern is to make sure everyone is the house is healthy so dear son will be a healthy baby

    Hi Regina,

I was quite weak after giving birth too but I started drinking Yomeishu and D.O.M.E. It helped me to regained my immunity soon enough. When i cough, i took a sip of either and my body starts to gain warmness and the coughing stops immediately. I continues taking it every night without fail. Quite soon, i got back my health and rarely fall sick. Yes, you can continue to breastfeed but pls only drink the tonic AFTER you breastfeed and by the next feed, the alcohol content in your body had come down. Take care...

    Re: dilemma!

when i was sick, i will use a nappy and cover my mouth.. like tie it across so that i look like those ninja... then i bf my dear son.

i also got quite bad cough once and went to see GP and it took a few weeks to fully recover. keep up the vitamins and drink lots of water and try to rest whenever you can. your body needs to rest to recover.

why your friends blame you? fall sick also not you want one mah... dont't think too much about what they say .. try to keep a positive thinking, that'd help you to recover faster too.

    Re: dilemma!

actually , you shud continue to BF. before your illness show up(eg start to cough) the virus already pass on 'silently' to your baby.

continue BF will pass the antibotics to your baby so that he can recover.

did you continue to carry your baby or latch on to feed? maybe that's why you pass the virus to him. maybe you can express or cover your mouth with surgical mask?

cough will take a long time to heal from my experience. so no matter how strong the medicine you take, you will not recover fast enough one..

my gynae saID there are many safe medicines .. you want to try other doc?

thks and i understand the above you mentioned... i usually pump out the milk cos he refuses to latch on and i am on mask for nearly 24/7 even when i'm sleeping..

fyi, i've tried most safe medi for bf-ing and all cant cure my cough. i've been to a few gp and polyclinic, my cough has been draggin for nearly 2mths alrdy & i was referred to polyclinic for xray too... becos of my cough, dear son is down with cough twice (though i did bf him during that time)... taking a stronger medi and stop bf-ing for a few days is the last resort. i dont wish to stop even for a day either. but if i dont get my cough cured., how am i going to ensure dear son to be healthy?
