My maid having finihed her 2 years contract with us wanted to return home to Indonesia. As I am having my 3rd child, I need to go and hire another maid to take care of my 2 older ones
I went back to my previous maid agency in Bukit Timah shopping centre. Apparently, the usual staff has change. I spoke to a lady by the name "Gin" who attended to my case. She told me the charges are usual as per what I paid previously. I said fine and we proceed with the maid selection.
She recommended this maid that has worked in Saudi for 3 years taking care of children, can speak English and very hygienic. She even commented that her boss personally interviewed all the maids and remarks written on the bio data is absolutely correct. She will also arrange a tele-conference which never materialise.
Trusting her, I selected this maid called "Fat" which will only come 1 month later. Fine, I waited for 1 month and finally the maid came. To my horror, she cannot even speak basic English. Even "Gin" has to speak to "Fat" in Bahasa Malay. On the day that I picked "Fat" and pay the money, I realise the suual charges that "Gin" says has increased and she did not even inform me. When I question, she says this is the rate. (1st sign of cheating). I paid up with not much choice right? Just a note to all potential employers, please check and double confirm the rates and make sure you are comfortable. My package also includes free change of maid within 12 months.
As I have sent my previous maid earlier in the morning, I have no choice but to try out "Fat". "Fat" looks pleasant enough and I have nothing against her but language is definitely a barrier. To the extent, that I even have to download English-Malay dictionary to communicate with her. All instructions re: my children were also written in English.
She does help to clean the house but can sense that she does not like taking care of children. Listed below is probably not acceptable to most mummies:h
1) leaving my 2 year old girl climbing the stool near the window in the living room while she sits in the kitchen.
2) bathing my boy with hot water and when my boy told her the water is too hot, she scolded my boy and say "not hot ".
3) Feed my choldren with leftovers that has a smell already.
4) leave all the lights/fans on all day
5) when you give her instructions and she do not understand, she walks off in the middle of the conversation.
6) Has absolutely no sense of time, always send my boy down to take the school bus late until the school bus auntie complain.
7) Forgot to pack my son's extra clothes to chilcare, etc.
The above are just some examples.
Finally, I decided that I really cannot allow such a maid to take care of my children/baby when I am at work so I called the agency taht I need a change. "Gin" has the uts to tell me no good Indonesia maids now and bio data will only come in 3 days. Fine, I waited 3 days before going down to re-select. To my horror, what new bio data? It's the same I previously had gone through!!!
She then says why not try Filipinos. I said fine as I do not have much choice and start going through 200 + bio datas again. Finally, I selected one ex-SIN called "Girl: who had 4 years exp. and completed all her contracts. This time I demanded to do a tele-interview. I could not get through the number provided by "Gin" for 2 days. In the end, I gave up and told "Gin" to get "Girl" to call me. Finally we had the tele-interview and am ok to hire her. To be on the safe side, I ask "Gin" to check with MOM on "Girl's" previous employment in Singapore. It turns out that "Girl" had 6 employers within 4 years and ony completed one contract, the rest is a few months!
I had to re-select another maid again and I chose "May". Tele-interview was fine but she had no passport and I need to wait for 1 1/2 to 2 months! Resigned to my fate, I said fine and paid a deposit of $100 for "booking". This $100 is refundable in the event I decided not to go ahead with "May". THEN.... "Gin" says since I did not choose Indonesia, Filipino has more charges imposed by the embassy which will set me back by another $600 + (2nd sign of cheating). I was like "wtf"??? Again, due to time constraints and I already paid up $800 to $900 agency fees earlier, I said ok.
Due to the many problems, my father went scouting for transfer maids for me and on the same day, he found 1 agency with a available transfer maid but of course, I need to pay agency fees again. I interviewed " Chloe" and found her quite suitable. So I called my maid agency and said do not proceed with "May" as I found a transfer already.
"Gin" then says fine but I need to return "Fat" to her for interviews with other employers. I said fine and I had to take leave for another week as no helper ("Chloe" waiting to be transfered and apply work permit and "Fat" to return to agency for interview")."Gin" aso informed that am liable to pay "Fat"'s levy and lodging of $10 per day up till 30 days if they cannot transfer. This was not clearly explained as "Gin" rushed through the contract when I picked up "Fat". I was like "fine, whatever, just get it over and done with"
I returned "Fat" on 29 May and she only manage to transfer "Fat" out on 15 June. So I need to pay $170 for 17 days of food and lodging + levy. I called her on 19 June asking for my refund, she says will be end June or early July. I told her to sette by end June cos taking too long, after all, they are very quick to take my money right?
No updates from her. I have to keep callin and sms her for the update. On 30 June, she says her boss will sign the cheque and I will have it by next week, after all, she did say early July what. Zzz.... bad attitude.
I asked her for the final amount and she calcuated for me $XXX. I questioned her on the $100 deposit I paid for booking "May" and she says she told me that it's not refundable. Look up to my earlier paragraphs. "Gin" said that this $100 was refundable. I argued and she says she will appeal to Managenment. I told her to get it done by hook or by crook. So rightfully my refund should be $XXX + $100.
Today, when my hubby went to collect the cheque, the cheque amount is less that what "Gin" told me earlier. (#rd sign of cheating" She had the guts to call me to say that Management deducted one month salary from my refund as per contract I need to use the maid for 30 days before transfer.
This is the last straw. Firstly, she did not inform me on this. Secondly, the maid recommended was totally not suitable and unsafe to leave my children with. If I had kept "Fat" and something happens to my children, will the maid agency compensate?. Thirdly, they are not transparent with their charges!!!
I am planning to lodge this with CASE but woud like to inform potential mummies and daddies to be careful esp. going to Bukit Timah Shopping Centre to select maids. To think their boss is on the papers just not long ago re: seecting Myanmmar maids to Singapore due to shortage of Indonesia maids.
She should not even comment as even interviewing candidates herself, she cannot even make a precise conclusion on the suitability of the maids!

I am also facing the same problem as you. I just got a new exp maid from indo surabaya. In her bio data they wrote she speaks good english and have exp on taking care of kids. And she herself is a mother of 1 daughter. But when i brought her home everything is totally opposite! She does not speak or understand english! My boy is 3years and he speaks english only. This is already a Big prob. Yet i gave her time to cope with new environment! Finally i got pissed of and told the agency. Now they are looking for a Fillipinos. But i dnt know whether fillipinos or indos are more worthy!!!

Totally agree! the agencies should be more upfront with the exact capabiities of the helpers! Hope you can find a better one this time round. Sighz...but sometimes, all depends on luck!!!
to be honest i'm working in a maid agency and most/ all fresh indonesians are extremely weak in their english no matter what it states on the biodata. the difference on the rating ( poor, fair, good) is refering to the pace of the learning ability of english. i do agree that some agencies are very unethical of not being transparent on their fees.
