I dont't set a strict target for my 8yo girl. If she can hit it, good, if not, I'll let her 'decide' when she's ready to surprise me. When there's no expectation, there's not much disappointment. Now, I'm not stressing her thus, not giving myself a chance to be depressed.
It is a long journey, lots of patience is required. Normal kid spend few days to achieve, mine could take years, eg spoon feeding. She's now able to hold a spoon (not very accurately) to scoop grapes or jelly to feed herself (she only pick up spoon for her favourite food, others - you FEED me, otherwise, I dont eat ). She's not constant and doesnt know how to hold spoon tightly n properly .... gets frustrated easily, short attention span, lazy.... On the bright side, at least she managed to scoop something after a few tries.
