Why Milk Matters

Today, milk is facing fierce competition from other beverages. Increased consumption of flavoured beverages and soft drinks among children has led to a decrease in overall milk intake. Drinking less milk can have both short and long term effects on the health of the child, e.g. developing osteoporosis later in life.

Milk contains a blend of nutrients that build strong bones and teeth

Nutrients involved in bone growth
From birth until the age of 20, our bones are in a phase of active growth, characterized by an increase in bone length and width. This is the time when milk is most required, to strengthen bones that are growing fast. Some of the nutrients that are involved in this process are highlighted in the table below.

Nutrient

• Enhances calcium absorption and consequently increase bone mass
• Protein together with calcium results in good bone health
Fats
• Essential Fatty Acids (Linoleic & Alpha-Linolenic Acid)
- Enhance calcium absorptioin
- Increase calcium deposits in the bone
- Improve bone strength and growth

• Contributes energy in the body
• Enhances the absorption of calcium

VITAMINS

Vitamin C
• Needed for the synthesis of the bone-strengthening protein-collagen
Vitamin K
• Essential for the activation of osteocalcin. Osteocalcin is a protein found in bone which attracts calcium

MINERALS
Calcium
• Primary mineral in bones

• Important for building and maintaining bone mass
Potassium
• Prevents loss of calcium through excretion
Magnesium
• Involved in the bone building processPhosphorus
• Important component of bone minerals

TRACE ELEMENTS
Fluoride
• Required for the hardening of the bones

• Important for the growth hormone
Copper

• A co-factor for enzymes involved in bone formation

Calcium is one of the most important nutrients required for bone growth. Without enough calcium, bones can become fragile and break easily.

Calcium For Your Child
Drinking milk which is a high source of calcium during childhood can help build the child’s “bone bank” to store calcium for later in life. As adults this stored calcium can help keep bones strong. Calcium also keeps teeth and gums healthy. It helps baby teeth and adult teeth to develop properly and to remain strong.

How much calcium should your child consume?
The US Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) for Calcium for children

Age of Child - Calcium mg / day
Birth to 6 months - 210
6 months to 1 year - 270
1 to 3 years - 500
4 to 8 years - 800

Food sources of calcium
Food Item - Serving size - Calcium (mg)
Milk - 1 cup - 300
Yoghurt - 1 tub(200 gm) - 300
Cheese, Cheddar - 1 slice - 200

I believe both BM and FM are best for babies. Still it is the best to give BM but if some Mummies can't or unable to do give BM, FM do help out :tlaugh:

Hi, my paediatrician told me that the higher that the DHA found in the milk, the better it is for IQ & immunity for the baby based on studies done. But of course he told me that I must nurture my baby for a lifetime not only in education but also the right behaviours..

There is controversy over whether Cow's milk helps to reduce osteoporosis or actually CAUSES it. Read here: Osteoporosis Natural Treatments - Truth About Osteoporosis Drugs - Osteoporosis Diet - Osteoporosis Treatment Information

Humans drink human milk, calves drink cow's milk... Humans are just not made to drink cow's milk. That is why infant forumla are not full cow's milk but the fats which cannot be digested by babies are removed and animal fats are added.

The only milk that matters here is 'Human breast milk', not to confuse it with animal milk.

When weaned off mummy's breast by 1 or 2 years old, babies do not need animal milk substitute. Infact, humans do not need milk when they are after 1 year old and eating healthy and balanced diet of solid food. Calves never need milk supplement once they wean off cows' milk, the same goes to all other mammals, so why should humans not be the same? What we hear are milk myths talked into our heads by marketing, advertising, and diary industries.

Calcium can be derived from green leafy vegetables, broccoli, soya milk, and many cow's milk alternatives like oats milk, soya milk, rice milk etc.

Theoretically it is correct to say babies above 1 year old do not need milk if they are eating a balanced diet. But in real life, many mummies are dealing with fussy/picky eaters. We are even grateful when our little ones only take spoonfuls or nibbles of food on some bad days. Sigh. So milk (breast milk, fresh milk or formula... any milk) still does play an important part here cos nutrition is very impt for a child's first 3 yrs.

Breast feeding is very important for all new born babies.breast feeding is easily digestive and contains lots of nutrition, vitamins, calcium etc which are helpful to your baby for growing.you need not to feed any solid food to your baby till 1 year.breast milk is only best for baby.and most important advice for all mothers of new born baby is that you also take care of your health in form of food, diseases .because if you are healthy then your baby will be healthy.

Milk is definitely the most basic and the most important diet of an infant. Milk is very beneficial, as it is rich of calcium and calcium keeps bones strong, healthy and in place.
