Hi all,
Today, I just started mixing Friso Comfort with girl's Enfalac A+ Stage 1 in 50:50 proportion to help ease her constipation. I was advised that using the newborn teat (Im using the Avent '1 drop' teat as my girl is 7 weeks only) may be difficult for her to suck as the Friso Comfort is thicker.

Other than cutting a 'X' on the teat to make it bigger, anyone used a larger sized teat (intended for older babies)????
e.g. change from Avent '1 drop' to '2 drop' teat? Or in the case of using NUK, using the LARGE size instead of MEDIUM (which according to the packaging is for Formula milk?)

cos when i used the normal teat, I noticed some fibrous stuff sticking to the sides of the bottle. My girl didnt finish the feed, so I dont know whether there was a lot of the thicker feed leftover in the bottle that couldnt get through the teat hole...

babe, when ds was drinking FC, we tried many teats, but all no use.. in e end, we cut the teats our own.. at least the milk wont get stucked. cos if u realise, FC milk will get thicken n harden aft few min or even few seconds..

I used size 3 for my girl, 1 size bigger than usual. If used normal size 2, totally can't suck milk out. Size 3 flow quite fast, starting she'll choke a bit but after a while will regulate the sucking. I feel there's too much milk lumps for friso comfort... dunno why like that.

Am thinking of changing to Nan Pro 1, anybody tried that before? Is it less sweet than friso?

Please never give Friso comfort to your innocent babies!

Please never give Friso comfort to your innocent babies!

my baby was constipated after her 3rd week of age. at that time we gave her my breast milk and Nutrilon standard by bottle. I was advised to replace Nutrilon with Friso comfort when she was in week 5. She pooped once every 3-4 days and her stool was a bit hard. When I started Friso comfort I realized that my baby has a strange behavior with the symptoms of an epilepsy seizure. The constipation get worse so that the baby had traces of blood in her stool and used to cry during defecation. Moreover, she was very sensitive and she was scared of almost everything even from a small movement of my head. She could not sleep during the day and one day after defecation she could not drink enough. She did not gain weight even she lost weigh once. I let the consultation office know about these problems and wanted to go back to Nutrilon standard. But they were disagree and encouraged me to continue with Friso comfort. After week 12 I cut Friso comfort and gave her again Nutrilon standard. I Gave the baby lactalose one day 5 ml and the other 2 days 3ml each. After this the problem of constipation has been solved. Baby is not frightened anymore. The strange behavior is gone. She sleeps around 5-6 hours a day and we enjoy our lives.

ava, even friso comfort is not suitable for ur baby, doesnt mean it is not suitable for other babies. ds has been on friso comfort from 5 week old to 4mth old, totally no pro. =)

I agree with what Apollo says what doesn't work for your bb doesn't mean it won't work on others. All babies r unique n special. Sometimes we really have to trial n error

I respect your and Apollo's ideas but it depends on what you mean by "does not work" do you mean that it does not help to relieve constipation? If so I also agree with you. What about the side effects? Since the side effects are high in number and sever in nature, even if it affect a low percent of babies, there should be something wrong and deserves investigation. The question in my mind is what can be in such a formula that can cause these sort of problems.

actually the side effects that u r talking abt seems to b the symptoms that your baby is not suitable for this formula. it doesnt only apply to this formula in fact other formulas as well, some babies r perfectly fine with a particular formula while others react badly to it like diarrhea, bad reflux or bad constipation in your case..

same like medications, some ppl suit certain types of medications while some ppl dont suit at all. as for FM, some babies take certain FM will have diarrhoea/constipation or whatever other 'symptoms it is to tell that the baby doesnt suit that particular FM. Sry to say that, but i really dont agree with you saying "Please never give Friso comfort to your innocent babies!" cos you sounds as if it will not suit other babies just becos ur baby dont suit it. Like my son, when he was taking friso gold, he keeps vomiting and offen have phlegm, only until we switch to FC after that to similac, then okay, these 2 FM suit him but i never ever tell anyone "pls never give ur baby friso gold" just becos my own son doesnt suit this FM cos i noe, many other babies are taking it and they are growing up well and healthy.

just my humble opinion. =)

In the opinion of health care specialists there is a big difference between a medication and a type of nutrition. You use a very small limited amount of medication with caution to treat a disease, while compare to medication there is no specific threshold for a nutrition and people use it as much as they need. Above all, every body expects a medication to have side effects that sometimes are dangerous for some people and thus they should cut the medication. All possible side effects are mentioned on the medication instruction, and are emphasized by physicians and often by pharmacists. Is it so for a formula? Certainly not because there should be no side effect. Also possible reaction of some babies to a formula are consider not so worse that worth it to mention. I would agree with you if the side effects (not different normal reactions) are mentioned on the package of the formula.
In our case you would have different idea if you would have experienced so many pain and troubles that we and our baby faced within two months of using friso comfort. In the Netherlands there is a referral system and you first meet general practitioner and if the situation is worse than that can be treated by a GP you will be referred to a specialist. Because of the frequent convulsive attacks, terrible fear and the sever constipation of our baby her GP referred her to a pediatrician. The pediatrician ordered a sonography of the brain and an electroencephalography because her primary diagnosis was epilepsy. You might, as a parent, understand how we hurt psychologically and emotionally just because of giving a type of formula to our baby. It is different than when you see your baby vomits, has cramps, cries, passes gases or even has rashes on her skin. By having this simple symptom you in your own can guess that it may be related to the formula. With those severe side effects that I explained before even physicians could not guess that these were related to the formula. Just when you are frustrated and hang to any rope to get rid of this situation you change the formula and all these problems are solved.
Still I believe even if not all the babies show this sort of symptoms this formula needs more investigation and scientific research, as many medications are recognized harmful and are withdrawn from the market decades after their introduction.

As a mother n a nurse I can empathize with what u went thru , but to use your example n telling others that friso comfort is not suitae for everyone may not exactly b the way to put it. Friso comfort is not a normal formula as compared to normal formula which r meant for bb with no reflux problem. I'm not sure why u r asked to give your bb friso comfort when she has no reflux or pooing issues. Yours is not of a lOcal context n the nutritional content n ingredients mayb slightly diff than Singapore... Some babies who have bad reflux really do need this kind of formula which r thinker in consistency to help them with the regurgitation n keeping the formula down
