Dear all,

I am Jane Chloe, mother of 2 kids age 11 and 14. Both my kids are recently very keen on learning 3D animation. Is this common in Singapore? Where can I find such courses in here and is this suitable for kids to learn such skills at their ages?

Thanks

Hello Jane,

Currently, the available courses for 3D animation in Singapore can be found in this link below:

https://www.hotcoursesabroad.com/study/training-degrees/singapore/animation-courses/loc/168/cgory/jb.64-4/sin/ct/programs.html

Unfortunately, these are serious courses that typically takes the commitment of full time diploma or undergraduate students spanning over least least 1 year or more. Diploma may cost around SGD9K/year while undergrad courses in from SGD25K/year and onwards.

I believe your kids are looking to learn 3D animation as a hobby rather than as a serious full time course. Unfortunately, these are not readily available. For hobbyist who do not intend to spend a fortune learning, I would recommend that you start off with some open-sourced animation programs in the market. These are free to use and download. Do not be mistaken that free means inferior. Programs like Inkscape, GIMP and Blender are high quality animation programs built by committed program experts who dedicate their time to make and improve these programs. I have personally used all these programs and these are awesome industrial grade products.

As for your kids, I would advise that they don't rush into 3D animation immediately. Go for 2D animation first. The concepts are transferable to 3D and the learning curve is a lot easier when you move on to 3D after acquiring the 2D animation knowledge.

Good luck to your kids trying out these open-sourced programs. I am sure its a better bet than to enroll into expensive classes or buying off-the-shelf programs like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop or Autodesk Maya. Once your kids are ready for more, you can consider investing in the paid softwares.

To download these free open-sourced programs, simply follow these links below:

For 3D Animation

Thanks Tiger. You seem very knowledgeable in animation. I have downloaded Inkscape, GIMP and Blender but my kids and I are struggling to figure out how they work. What can I do to overcome the learning curve? Can I ask you a favour to provide some coaching to my kids since there are no commercial classes available. Please let me know your rates. Thank you.
