The Habit of Winning

WINNING IS NOT A SOMETIME THING. YOU DON’T WIN ONCE-IN-A-WHILE. You don’t do things right once-in-a-while. You do them right all the time.

Wining is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. There is no room for second place.

There is only one place in my game and that is first place. I have finished second twice in my time and I never want to finish second again. The second place in any game is for losers. It is and must always be your zeal to be first in anything that you do, and to win, and to win, and to win, but only by soaring with your own wings. Do not be afraid to lose so that you may dare to know how to win.

Every time you play to win you must use every inch of you. You have got to be smart in this world to win. Don’t worry about the people who grin. If you always have a lot of head and a lot of heart you are never going to come in second.

The objective in life is to win by carrying your own load. This does not mean that you walk over others to reach your goal. You simply put your shoulders to the task and not to stop until you have done our best.

It is a reality in life that when you do something well you become a standard for the world. People will never worry about the average man. They only follow the man who shows that he knows how to lift his load and refuses to lift those who want to lean.

Any man is happier when he has done the best he could for a good cause. He knows his fines hour, his greatest fulfillment and all that he holds dear is inherent in what he knows he has given his best to.

Aesop's Fable: The Lion and the Mouse

Once, a lion was asleep and a mouse ran all along his body. The lion awoke with a start, seized the mouse and was about to eat him, when the mouse begged him to spare his life, promising that he would repay the favour.

The lion was so amused at this that he let the little fellow go.

Not very long afterwards, the mouse was able to return the favor.

For, as a matter of fact, some hunters caught the lion and tied him to a tree with a rope. The mouse heard him groaning, ran up and gnawed through the rope until the lion was free.

"You see?" squeaked the mouse. "Not long ago you mocked me when i said i would return your favor. But now you can see that even mice are grateful!"

Moral of the story: Little friends may prove great friends, why not have more friends?

Are Blacks Superiors Runners?

When we give thoughts about the world of running, the fastest man of earth Usain Bolt could have come into mind. He won an impressive 6 Gold Medals in the Olympic sprinting event 3 in Beijing 2008 and 3 in London 2012 and 11 Gold Medals in World Championship. How about the long distance runners? Did it come to mind that they are Africans or the Kenyans that dominated the long distance event?

Professor Yannis Pistsiladis has collected and research on the DNA of quite a number of world class athletes and from which he concluded that there was no significant difference between the difference races. Then what causes Jamaicans to dominate the sprinting events or the Kenyans to dominate the long distance events?

Jamaica is a country with a few popular sports like Track, Cricket and Soccer. The country itself has invested immensely in school’s Track and Field facility. Being a popular sport, it is also their way out of poverty. The Olympic medallists are hailed as a hero’s back home. With the right culture, environment and coaches it is no wonder they produce world class athletes.
How about long distance running, the top long distance runners actually came from a town known as Eldoret lying in the Great Rift Valley. The top athletes for long distance running actually lived predominantly in areas of high altitude. Altitude training has long been used by endurance athletes to improve performance because the thin air forces the body to produce more oxygen carrying red blood cells which in turn boosts endurance.

Kenyan youngsters do not run to school for fun, it is usually out of necessity due to the lack of public transportation. They could clock in excess of twenty kilometres per day, you could say their training started since young. This was when by their early 20s, they could have clocked in their 10 000 hours of training, if you are to remember the 10,000 hour rule which I had summarized previously.

My conclusion is that, nothing happens by chance it takes careful planning to reach your goals. Perhaps you could have a goal for your child, what could it be and how can you as a parent help your child achieve success. Over at Ace Tutors we are able to help your child find the right tutors with our years of experience. Entrepreneurship’s importance in Singapore

Singapore is one of the easiest countries within the region to set up a company. We are considered a developed nation and how can we continue on our growth without ever being too dependent on foreign national companies? Imagine a major economic depression which will lead to mass lay off, how can we cushion the impact even before it happens? The Singapore government is doing a fairly good job and as always it can be better. I believe the answer lies therein Entrepreneurship.

How can we encourage more entrepreneurship? Perhaps we could turn to our ally; Israel for some ideas. Israel is a Jewish state that is constantly under threat from their neighbours. Their neighbours have placed embargoes on them; therefore they have to be creative with their economy.

Education

Israel has 4 universities ranked in the top 200 universities in the world. Before innovation and entrepreneurship can take place one cannot deny the fact that a solid education is essential. Israeli companies and entities registered no less than 3,555 patents in the United States in 2014. The patents were from Israeli based companies in the US followed by Tel Aviv University’s research institutes and the Weizmann Institute.

Venture Capital Fund

There were a few venture capital fund created by the Israeli government. It provided not only funding but network and mentors that will guide the entrepreneurs to doing business or the process of designing or improving on their products.

Attitude

Israelis have a never give up attitude towards life; they deem it constructive failures or intelligent failures. Read about why failures are good for your child. One of the reasons Intel is still around producing chips was due to the Israelites.

Throughout the history of modern computing, the speed of data processing – the time it takes for your computer to do anything was determined by the speed of a chip’s transistors. The transistors will flip on and off, and the order in which they did so produced a code. The quicker the transistors could be made to flip on and off, the more powerful the software could run.

Back in the days when the faster the chip went, it also meant more energy were consumed, which resulted in more heat being produced. Chips overheating would soon become a critical issue as that meant the cooling fan have to be bigger and faster. This would not work with laptops as they are meant to be portable. They deem this the “power wall” problem.

The Israel Intel team researched proves their point; “cornered” their executives in Santa Clara before then CEO Otellini finally changed his mind to go with the Israelis research to take a step back on creating more powerful chips that consumed more energy. They came up with what is known as the Centrino chip which was suitable for laptops.

The never give up attitude and logic, they used to challenge their bosses for whatever is right is admirable. If it is based on logic and facts, the change brought about will be healthy for personal growth or even for the company.

You could read more about where my ideas came from, from this free E Book titled Start up nation.

Conclusion

There are definitely pros and cons of being an employer or employee, I believe what matters is a solid foundation of academic knowledge. Once the roots are firm, the child will be free to explore the different aspect, in what they would like to achieve in their career life when they are an adult. Do let Ace Tutors play a part in finding you suitable Tutors to guide your child.

Preparation for Mid-Year Exams

Determine the topics and chapters to be covered.

Consult your respective subject teachers for hints about what are to be tested. For example; which part of Singapore history? Science question likely to be tested on? Needless to say maths is about continuous practice.

• You could be squeezed for time, understand the topics, concepts or skill being tested. Allocate enough time to revise on those that are likely to be tested on. Review your textbooks on the section which you have highlighted, or parts which your teacher had stressed on repeatedly are clues.

• What type of questions will be on the paper, for example; multiple choice, essay, word problem, and so on? How will the exam paper be structured? How the different sections are worth will be able to assist you for your study plan?

Have a study plan.

Since it is one month before the mid-year exams, it will be advisable to know how much time you want to spend on revising the different topics. Do not cram everything as it will not help, remember to take intermittent beak to give your brain a rest.

• Decide on the challenging topics and subjects to revise on first, those that you already knew will come easy when being reviewed at a later stage.

Know your own study methods.

It varies from student to student; methods include using colours, pictures, brainstorming or mind mapping.

• Use tools that will help you to study. Tools like flash cards may be boring, but really help memorize important things. If flash cards don't seem to help, writing out an outline of your notes may work.

• Study smart and hard.

Seek help.

Classmates can be helpful in studying, but choose someone understand the subject matter and is willing to help. Ask help from your parents or siblings; they may really appreciate being asked. Younger siblings, especially like "quizzing" older brothers or sisters!

• Form a study group. Not only do you have additional help, you also have the advantage of studying with people you know well. However, avoid accepting those that will be of no help, and only distract your whole group from studying. Don't be rude and reject everyone whom you don't like, but do be cautious about who you add to your study group!

Do let us assist you in finding a home tutor if you need a tutor who is by example, have gone through many exams and tests and excel. They will be able to share their experiences with you.

Your Child: Is learning in an English environment the best thing for them?

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Living in Singapore as either a local or an expat, will only make you aware of how much of a cultural melting pot this city is, with the Red Dot’s population of 5.54million made up of 1.63million non-residents. With Singapore speaking five official languages, along with those additional languages spoken by non-residents, we must consider how learning in an English environment brings both advantages and disadvantages to our non-native children and their education.

Learning: The Importance of Having Fun
Estimated reading time: 1.5 minutes

While working as an English language tutor in Singapore, my aim was to ensure that all of my students were engaged with their learning, achieving their goals, and improving their levels of English and confidence, all whilst having fun, and that is where I think there is a difference between the ideologies of certain cultures and learning.

Sight Words

Sight words

Estimated reading time: 2 minutesAs can be said for most areas of English for little learners, some children have absolutely no problem when it comes to picking up reading skills, while some kids really struggle to get going, and we can understand why! While some words in a book can be sounded out by children, as we all know, English is full of exceptions, and sight words are one of them. These are all the words in a text that cannot be sounded out, and must simply be learnt, for your child to understand at least half of the words in a text, which can be tricky if your child, like most others, doesn’t want to sit and learn words off by heart.

Do sports create good studying?

Do sports create good studying?
Estimated reading time: 1.5 minutes

A study undertaken in Singapore in 2014, showed that teenagers in the city, like worldwide are not active enough and need to do more in order to live a longer and healthier lifestyle. While a walk which raises the heart rate to 140 beats a minute counts as moderate activity, the Straits Times published the results of a study showing that “not one of the students (who partook in a study) met the national guideline of having at least an hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day.” This led me to questioning if there are benefits of sports in addition to the obvious, and whether it can increase productivity in learning. As we all know, experts believe that we need to do at least 30 minutes or preferably one hour of exercise each day, in order to gain the most from a healthy body and lifestyle, but as our days become increasingly more sedentary, and technology is all too easily available, times are changing with not enough people engaging in physical activity.

Have you ever wonder what makes a professional athlete, a musician, a programming wizard, a singer that professional? Do we associate it with their innate talent and were they just lucky to be discovered? Or is there a deeper connection? Are their achievements the results of talent coupled with diligence?

Why You Should Start a Dialogue Journal with Your Child

[h=2]Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Getting kids to write is no easy task, and yet mastering this critical skill is necessary for success in school and career.

Dialogue journals are informal but meaningful collections of writing between two people. Useful for recording reflections about reading, observations and more, a dialogue journal may be the impetus your child needs to begin writing, especially if he or she is an emerging writer or one who still struggles to get thoughts on paper.
