It depends on the type of metal used to make the door. A water-based coating should work; for others, an oil-based one. I ran into the same problem with my garage door that I ordered from https://doorsdirect2u.co.uk/product-category/garage-doors/.
My main stupidity was that I didn't ask them directly what was best for their door, and I called a local paint company that used water-based polish, and it almost ruined it. Guys, it's great that there are forums like this where everyone can share their experiences and opinions!
