Dear Mummies,

I'll be due next month and am keen to try breastfeeding, however i have flat nipples and gynae advice against drawing out the nipples with a nipplette at this stage.

Can you advice whether when i should draw out the nipples to get ready for breastfeeding? Can i do it right after delivery before latching?

Thank you!

I had same problem with my right breast....i bought avent nipple shield then put it on b4 let baby suckle....my silly boi din noe how to suckle properly until he was ard 3wks old...

so meantime i pump n bottle fed with EBM, but keep trying to latch him so he noe how to suck lor....

now he is 11mths le, i'm still breastfeeding him :p

oh ya, n after frequent pumping, e nipple will slowly be drawn out :)

btw, i tink ur gynae's concern is stimulating e nipple may cause u to go into early labour :) so unless ur baby is already of good weight n u r past 37wks, dun try the nipplette.

Hi Minami,

I used to have an inverted nipple. But during the first few days had some problems latching baby on. Like wat stonson said frequent pumping will slowly draw out your nipple. :) Don't worry abt it ^^

I have inverted nipples too. I used a breast shell when i nurse the other breast. i express frequently too. after DS nurse from my right & switch to my left, my nipples will be more protruding & easier for him to grasp. Sometimes, milk will leak & collected in the breast shell. then i pour the milk into a milk bottle & store for future use.

It's POSSIBLE to nurse.:tlaugh:

So will you suggest that i should get my nipple shield now instead of getting the nippelette?

Will baby be confuse with the actual nipple?

You can also nurse the breast with inverted nipple a 2nd breast. your baby not so hungry & is not so fussy. use your middle finger & index finger, form a V-shape & press against your breast to make your nuipples more protruding.

I hv semi-inverted nipple and my nipple are pretty big. Ive used Avent nipplete and ameda founder during pregnancy but they didnt manage to pull out the nipple. I had problem latching dd after delivery. Thus i express out for her during the 1st mth. Only managed to latch her after 1st mth. Its tough job but can be done. Remember to latch your baby during the 1st hr after delivery. I find it has help my baby to remember how to latch even after 1st mth :) Good Luck!

Hi Minami,

I'm sorry i am late in my reply. Personally have no flat or inverted nipples but know friends who does. After some period of bfg, generally their nipples does protrude out.

According to an LC i know, pregnant mums can work on drawing the nipples out from the 7th mth of pregnancy. but do note that you should do this with the help of an IBCLC who is train in lactation and generally most doctors do not specialise in lactation.

also, babies nurses on your aerola not your nipples hence in general you do not need to worry about flat nipples or inverted nipples. :)

happy delivery..... i hope baby has arrived since your post was a mth ago. :)

Thanks mummies,
i'd delivered and baby didn't latch well even though the tried drawing out the nipples, using the nipple shield..etc...etc LC told me that my nipples are too deeply inverted. Therefore now i'm fully expressing, console myself that still better then not giving BM at all.

dear minami,

i hv flat nipples too and "suffered" during the first few weeks trying to latch him on...sometimes i succeed, but most times, i had to express it out to bottle feed.
:wong19:
but don't kill urself over it - to me, what's more impt here is tt the baby is getting breastmilk into his tummy first and foremost!
:Dancing_wub:

strangely, i can attest to what the mummies here have said - tt after a while of expressing and failed attempts, the nipples would eventually take the shape which would allow the bb to latch on.

at no juncture did I use the nipplette.

jia you !!
