My son was born in July 29th 2009. He's now coming to 27th months old. Guess by now all ur kids are already talking rite.... My son is oni saying few words e.g papa, yellow, car, bye. That's all. And these words which I mentioned rarely comes out from his mouth too. He said it out once in a blue moon.. We talk to him everyday. We sent him to childcare when he was 18th months. We tried to give him his fav foods by forcing him to call us papa or mama before getting wat he wan but he refuse to open his mouth. The childcare teachers all like him very much that they keep encouraging him to speak but still he refuse to open his mouth. We're very worried... Anyone can share ur views?:tsad:

How is his body language when you talk to him? Were u able to have eye contact with him while you try to engage in a conversation with him? Does he understand you when you give him instructions? How does he indicate that he wants certain things from you?

I guess pd are able to do a simple assessment, and if required they can refer you to the specialist.

I have the same problem. And looking at my friend's children about the same age being able to say in words. So i brought my girl to see a doctor and was referred to a child specialist and then referred to a speech therapist.

The speech therapist diagnosed that my girl has speech delay, probably because we didn't teach her before she was 18 mths. But nonetheless, she was great help. Not knowing what to do as a first time mom, she taught me how to teach my girl to speak, intro her to different words by using actual actions. And with the corporation with the CCC, she is able to at least say alot of words and able to express herself with words.

But definitely, the process is stressful and frustrated. Try asking the teachers from CCC and see what they say regarding his progress.

dont worry dragon 76
my son was born jan 2008 & he is just managing a short sentence. before that he's just like yours. i got worried & asked the sch for feedback, the teachers there r not worried so it makes me feel assured. the teacher know my concern & help him with his speech in sch. i dont know how she did it but gradually over a yr, he can construct a sentence now. so the teacher told me she's very pleased with his progress despite most of his freinds or all his friends can talk better. my husband always praise him, told him he's done very well despite i can see how much better his friends did. something we can think abt?

try talking to the ctr's teacher. if she's not worried , it's very good news. when they have the mid yr & end yr meeting with parents, ask how's his progress with his speech. give him till 3.5yrs old? some children r just faster & slower in different area...... unless the teachers said there is a problem then go to a specialist to verify.

i think he's ok cos he said car/yelllow....mind you, yellow is 2 syllabus. praise him for saying that. try reading online for accurate data. perhaps he just doesnt like to talk does not mean he cant.

I let my daughter watched youtube education videos. Im surprised that some of the alphabets she can pronounce on her own when I tested her.

Importantly, you have to praise and encourage. :001_302:

My son is born Oct 2009, not talking too. Can only say Pa, Ma and mum mum. We talk to him everyday and try to get him to talk but he just look at us. The PD suggested to us to bring him to speech therapist if he still don't talk after joining the playgroup next year..

Anyone can share what the speech therapist will do during the session? Thanks.

my boy just turned 2, he's born on nov 2009. he only babble mamama and bababa. brought him to speech therapist as his pediatrician suggested. during the assesment they found out my boy has several issues apart from speech delay, he has sensory issues which affects my boy ability to concentrate and pay attention. so now he's doing occupational therapy to improve his concentration first then speech theraphy in the future.

although people around me said that my boy has slower pace and that i should give him more time as one day he would speak. but i followed my instinct and brought him to professionals for early intervention.

I got referral letter from polyclinics to a child specialist at kkh and then referral to speech therapy from the child specialist too. got referral, so it's under subsidized rate, per visit is about $20+. My girl is progressing well now, especially with help from her childcare teachers, and also ourselves and family members. =)

Hi mag_huiling,

Thanks for sharing. Do we have to wait for long to see the child specialist from KKH? The speech therapy is done at KKH?

Maybe u want to tempt him to speak with nice food and toys.. if they want to play a toy for example, they must say "papa, i want toy " before he/she gets their playtoy

Hi, do you send your boy for theraphy? Is he attending childcare/preschool?

My boy is 34month now still not talking yet and has very limited words, but he's progressing well with therapies.

Just to share. My son was late in speaking as well and also we suspected that he could b autistic (speech delay is one symptom of autism) .we went to polyclinic when he was about 2 and half yr old and got a referal to the specialist to assess him. We found out that he is 1 yr behind his peers when it comes to speech cos he could only manage a few words (single syllabus) at this age.

So, we went thru speech therapies and also , i started sending him to a 2 hour daily playgroup. Then, one fine day, he just started talking a lot. it started with saying words that contains 2 diff sounds like "puppy" to phrases and now he's 34mth, he is making sentences. tho his pronunciation is not clear at times and he couldnt say words with sounds like "f", "g", it was a good progress.

Personally, i think sending to the daily playgroup helps a lot cos the playgp which I send him to has a good teacher pupil ratio of about 1:4. think he sees his frens talking, he also started talking. As for the therapies, cos we only went for 4 sessions , so i dun really think is that helpful.

Usually, the boys will start to talk late. I was told that you only worry if your child doesn;t make sentences by age 4. so, dun worry as much. sometimes need to force them to talk abit. My hubby kept forcing my son to talk and refused to give him the thing that he wanted unless he speak and ask for it. mayb cna try
