My 2 year old daughter is suffering from Adenotonsillar Hypertrophy

I just want to share my experience with parents whose kids are having this problem.

Since play group started in May 2012, we notice our daughter (Sydnee) breath very heavily. It's worse when she have flu or sore throat. he is like gasping for air. At night night when she sleeps, she snore loudly too. She have to sleep on her side or prone down as this will help her breath better.

We went to alot of clinic, pediatrician but no doctor notice anything nor recommand anything. Out of frastration, I got one of the GP to write me a letter to get her diagnose by KK ENT specialist. We waited for 3 hours for our turn to see Dr Annette Ang. She is a very young but experience doctor. She force Sydnee to open her mouth and immediately diagnose her with big tonsil. I was carrying Sydnee so my wife did see the enlarge tonsil. It's like 2 big fishball blocking her throat. To further evaluate, she sent us for Xray to check on her Adenoid. Adenoid is actuall a "gateway" in the nose. Sydnee's Adenoid is as enlarge and left with 10% of air way. Dr Annette feel that medication does not help as Sydnee's face shape is relatively small. For a normal child, the face will grow as aged and the tonsil and Adenoids will become small at the age of 10. Hence Dr Annette recommand us to operate her. My wife broke down.

We try to check online but locally not many people post it online, but its very common oversea. We went for a second opinon in mount E. The Dr scope Sydnee and have the same recommandationas well. In the end we choose to have the operation done in KK by Dr Annette as she have done on baby who is 18 months old.

The operation have to be done on general anesthetic. Risk of the operation is 0.9%. On 30th Oct 12 7am we reached KK and Sydnee was put to GA at around 8.45am. The ops took only 40mins. After which Sydnee was warded for 1 day. The tonsil cut was shown to us and it really shocked us. Its like 2 meat balls. Imagine her face is so small and with the 2 meat ball in her throat.

Afterwhich Sydnee was in her ward, she can eat ice cream. Ice cream is good for her as it cools her wound. She still feel blur after the GA but she recover very well in 3 - 4 hours time. We are glad that as parents we made the right choice and everything went so well. Have to thank Dr Annette for the wonderful job and Sydnee is recovery very well.
