Dear mummies n daddies,
I'm a new mother to my 4-mth old boy. I got alot of questions to ask. My baby has been visiting the PD on and off. Sigh. In fact, I spent alot of his medication.
1) my boy has developed red bumps on the scalp n his skin also has red red patches. He begin to scratch his scalp until got watery substance come out. I brought him to my Pd n my Pd changed his bath soap to medicated kind. Condition improved but the bumps still appear on n off. :( Pd say Tat condition is eczema. Now I dunoe how to make him free from redness...it has been there for almost a month already.

2) Pd also recommend him switch his milk powder from enfalac to nan pro hypoallergenic. Then his stools became dark green color n very smelly. Then slowly his milk intake reduce from 160ml to 140ml n now 80ml...most of the time he dun finished his milk. Pd say his weight is below average. :( how?? He supposed to drink every 3 hourly but Nw even 4 hourly he also can't finished his milk. Is it bcos he dun like nan?

3) now he wake up in his sleep crying suddenly...I usually put him in sarong cradle. Then sometimes he is quite inconsolable too! How? He will stay calm when we bring him to our water feature. The moment we stepped away, he cry...

4) my dad is so traditional. I told him Tat I wan to gif my bb last feed at 11.30pm but he say dun wake him up. He say if bb nt enough sleep, he will b very cranky. Like tis how? Then he wake up at 3am everyday...gosh...hw can I train him to sleep our timing??

5) he used to b very cheerful n smile to me when I look at him...Nw when I see him, he dun look at me...he is no longer Tat cheerful anymore. :( so sad...

Sigh help!! :( I think if his skin condition improve, he might feel better...but I scare bring him to Pd, then Pd ask me bring him to skin specialist! Gosh...isn't it alot of money? :(( his milk powder is nt cheap already..:( I'm very sad...

1) I use california baby calendula cream for my gal's rashes, it works well for her :) have you been visiting the same pediatrician? Maybe visit another one for a second opinion

4) Actually you don't have to wake your boy up to feed him. Just carry him up and give him the bottle. My gal always drink with her eyes close at ard 11 or 12, then once she finishes her milk I just put her back to her cot and she will go back to her sleeping mode..that will be enough to last till morning

1. Eczema: My boy has bad eczema too. Eczema cannot be cured by creams; most important thing is to find the root cause or trigger.
E.g. My own eczema was due to meat allergy, so it went away when I turned vegetarian. My son's eczema was due to soy allergy, so I simply avoid all soy for him.

What shampoo is your baby using? Probably sensitive to the ingredients. Ensure no SLS, artificial colour and fragrance in his body care products.

Read: 29 Tips to Fight Baby's Eczema | Mummy's Reviews

If nothing works, then it's good to seek medical help early. I brought my boy to see a paediatric dermatologist. When we discovered the cause of his eczema, then dont't need to visit her anymore.

3. White noise: My boy was a fussy sleeper, so we switch on white noise through his sleep to calm him down. E.g. Loop rainfall track on CD player throughout. Or can try switching off when he falls asleep, then switch on when he fusses.

4. Dream feed: Feeding baby when he's asleep is called dreamfeeding and is a good method to enhance your own sleep. Maybe he's a light sleeper and doesn't like it when you disturb his sleep. Instead of carrying him up, try tickling his lower lip with bottle teat until he opens mouth, then slide bottle in and let him suckle when asleep.

5. Give baby lots of cuddles, hugs and kisses to feel your love. Smile at him often. Baby can be affected by Mummy's mood. So you must be cheerful and positive first, then he can feel your positive emotions. Cheer up and believe that things will be fine. :)

~>I am using what my PD gave...a milder shampoo already. I even change his milk powder from Enfalac to Nan Pro HA. My baby develop those rashes cos of his CNY clothes I bought and it happens that the dye came off somehow...so his whole body got rashes. After that, even after medication, the rashes are still there on and off...thanks for the tips...i will try to get the cause of his rashes besides the allergy to 'funny' dye.

~> Is visiting a dermatologist expensive?

~> Just realise yesterday night that he cries suddenly cos he got 'nightmare' after a day of laughing and playing. My hubby say he saw his eyes closed and crying and he concluded that. :( sigh...

~> Ya I did that...sometimes he can sleep and drink...but now he got 'awaken' easily...so b4 we start feeding, he cry already. :( Anyhow we will try again...must adjust his timing to our timing...

~> Oh dear...every morning he din smile to me cos i not happy? He really depends on his mood...sigh...so tempremental like me! :X

Thanks babe! :)

I also want to add that eczema is not a condition that is like flu, just take medicine, on in this case apply cream then will recover a week later. It's a chronic disease, where you have to constantly monitor and keep in control. Like what Mummy to Baby V said, it's important to find the root cause of the problem. It may not be food, can also be environmental like allergic to dust mites, cat fur, dog fur, etc. Other things also include sudden change in temperature, like suddenly from cold room u walk out into the hot sun. Try to dress ur baby in light cotton clothing.

My son's eczema has been going on since 1st month. Now he is already 5 months but the problem comes and goes. We have not found the root cause of it, as skin prick tests at this age may not be very accurate. So I just control with cream and just moisturize without the steroid cream if the situation improves. Sometimes the bumps will disappear for a week, the come back again.

Ur son may be unhappy cause of the discomfort the eczema brings. We noticed that when my son's eczema improved he's a much happier baby.

My elder girl also got eczema before and she was allergic to egg.

The good news is as ur boy grows older, the eczema symptoms may become not as bad as before. Also there is a chance he will outgrow it. :)

Specialist needs to be Paediatric Dermatologist who's experienced in babies' skin, not just dermatologist who treats adults. Consultation should be about same as most private specialists. Or can enquire with skin center or KKH if they've such doctors. We're based in KL now, came back to visit Dr Jean Ho at Mt. E twice.

New clothes must be washed separately from existing clothes before wearing because of added chemicals to make the clothes look nice at the stores. Suggest you stop letting baby wear the suspicious CNY clothes. Choose 100% cotton or bamboo fabrics for him, no rough embroidery, metal buttons, etc inside that can irritate his skin.

Eczema can affect sleep due to the itchiness, so try your best to figure out the cause asap.

At least 1-2 hours before bedtime, must let baby tune down, no loud laughing, active play, etc. Overstimulated baby may not sleep well.

Lol! I saw Tat my bb last feed was 6.45pm at 140ml, then at 11pm I carry him up to change his diaper, he sleep all the way. Then I already standby his milk for him but he do his usual 'close his mouth tight if dunwan to drink' pattern. I din force, I try to let him drink a few times but he dunwan. :( so no choice I put him back to sleep...

There are PD dermatologists at KKH & NSC. You can make appointment as a private patient, paying about 80 for 1st time & 67 for subsequent if I remember right. Otherwise can go to polyclinic and get a referral. We did the latter. But for polyclinic they will refer you to the PD at KKH first, then the PD will refer your case either to NSC or KKH PD dermatologist.

We swaddled my boy up to stop him from scratching. We have our own ways of "tying" his hands up so he cannot scratch. There is even one time I cut a toilet roll into half, and stick each half up his elbow so that he cannot bend his arms to scratch hahaha. Actually it is better for him that he cannot reach and scratch and sleep. Sometimes my boy will scratch himself in his sleep and it will cause him to wake up.

Hi,
Thanks again. I never let him wear Tat red romper again. Sigh. Anyway he won't be able to fit next year cny.
I have changed his milk, buy him new cotton tops, n still applying cream n gt improvement so I really dunoe wat's the cause. Sigh...hard to b a detective for such things. :((
Then my bb Nw dun play w me anymore. Guess I din spend enough time w him. I oso told my dad do nt play so much in the day n b4 sleep...so he din play with him tis evening n hence he has been sleeping n dunwan to drink milk. -.-"
So much things to learn! Glad Tat mummies here r so helpful to provide advice!

Hi

My son is also facing the same situation as yours. I also bot him to see pd few times for his rashes on his face and scalp. I used to let him drink enfa HA and the rashes stil persisted. Recently i just changed to NAN HA and it works well for him. U can try to change to NAN HA.

I also wil wake him up at 11.30 for his last feed so that he can sleep thoughout the night. He wil wake up at around 7plus for his first feed.

Hi,
My bb was on enfalac n Pd suggest to switch to nan pro HA n he drop his intake from 160ml to 80ml. :( anyway his rashes still around. I still have not found the main cause yet. :( anyway now I mixed between nan pro HA n enfalac cos I gt both n he seems to drink more than 80ml. My boy's weight is slightly below average. So worrying. Then his skin is never smooth eversince first breakout.
Now I'm trying to wake him for last feed btw 11 to 11.30pm. So far he can only sleep for 5 hours. Let me try n hole he can sleep longer instead.
Thanks for Yr advice! :)
