Btw wher can i find lactation specialist ??

hi ling.er, congrats. my baby was also a 'hurry newborn'. but i didn't give in to his crying. it was latch or no milk. newborns don't need to drink that much at a time, because their tummies are only walnut size. but they do need to hv milk very often, sometimes as often as every hour. persevere! and like many mummies above said, go see an LC. I saw one when my boy was 4 weeks old and she helped me overcome my latch problem on one side of my breasts. the hospital where u delivered your baby will have LCs. just check with them. An LC should also have come round to see you when you had just delivered - did any visit u while u were still warded?

It depends... maternity ward nurses provide help for bf mums but some are just not experienced enough. Different hospitals, different practices. Also depends on whether there's an LC working in the hospital you delivered in. If there is, I think you need to emphasize to the nurses and be firm abt wanting to see an LC, else the nurses on duty in that ward will come. An LC is not a nurse, they are different specialities.

For both my deliveries, the LC didn't come despite requesting in advance thru my gynae the 2nd time round. I fumbled through on my own with help from a very experienced maternity ward staff nurse. After I was discharged, I went to consult Doris Fok on my own.

Jiayou! I am still bf my 21 mth old son.

For me, till he's full. In the early days, I can spend hours lying in bed. When he was bigger, the feeding time got cut to 15 min or so.

yes, till he's full for me too. newborns tend to take a longer time to nurse becos their suckling is not so efficient and they also tend to doze off at the breast (warm and comforting with mummy's scent). so nursing for 30-45min for both breasts is not uncommon. just tickle him to wake him up to see if he will suckle some more. if he's full, he will unlatch himself. if he doesn't wake up despite repeated tickling, i would just let him sleep and nurse him again when he's awake and hungry again.

but this is also a passing phase and they will get more efficient as well as less sleepy as they get more aware of their environment. the timing can be reduced to as short as 5-10 minutes per breast when they are older.

ling.er,

Does bb prefer 1 breast over the other? I personally dun switch sides during each session. He will nurse on left for 1 session, then right for another session and so on.

when my boy was 3-10 months, i also let him nurse one side each time. then when we started to cut down the number of times he drinks EBM or nurses each day when he started taking three solid meals, i got him to nurse both sides each time by telling him after finishing one that 'there are always two sides for milk milk, one side and the other side'. after some time, he understood what i was telling him, and now he will point out to me the other side that he gotta nurse on after he is done with one side. so the pattern changes....but it's also my effort to make sure that he is still getting enough breastmilk even with fewer sessions.

i kiasu .... ;p
For my son if one side Not enough for him he self service n lift up shirt for the other side when we r home when we r out one side is enough cos he's so distracted with the surroundings. When he sees my niece who's 5 yes old drinking milk from her mum he too must come over to me almost immediately

I noticed my boy is getting more efficient in nursing, the timing was short 5-10 mins/ breast. Sometimes, I'm wondering is he really getting enuf?? Hwever, his next bf session will b 3-4hrs later. But at times, he still nursed 30mins per bf session depending on his mood. :elvis:

if it is not enough, he will surely let you know. babies are definitely not stupid to let themselves go hungry without notice. =)
