Side effect of vaccination

Hello! I just want to check if any mums experience this.

My son is 4 months old and had just gotten his second 5-in-1 jab together with oral rotarix vaccination on Wednesday.

On Wednesday night, we spotted a few red spots on his thigh but didn't think much of it as we thought it's a temporary rash or insect bite.

On Friday night, he started to have red patches on his face, arms and legs. So we decided to bring him to the polyclinic on Saturday morning.

Today (Saturday), we brought him to the polyclinic and got referred to KK A&E. The doctor didn't really know how to diagnose him. So she asked another doctor. The second doctor can't tell much either. So they consulted a senior doctor. There wasn't a conclusive diagnosis but they suspect it's because of the injection. They said that the first vaccination, usually there wouldn't be any reaction. But second time there might be, and the next time my son will have his vaccine, it might be worse.

They wanted to give him syrup, but as he is below 6 months, so they do not give it. Instead, they gave calamine lotion for his rashes. But his rashes ain't itchy nor painful. I don't see him rubbing, scratching or being irritated by it. So I didn't apply. The lotion is to relief the itchiness and doesn't help reducing the rash...

Before we left, they mention that a team from KK who are specialised in allergies of vaccination will call me on Monday or Tuesday..

His rashes is spreading to his stomach and back now.. hopefully it will be gone soon.

I'm kind of worried about the next time he will have an injection..

Anyone's child experience any side effect of vaccination that is not normal?

According to them, first vaccine usually will not show anything. but subsequent vaccines, the effects will be stronger.

The reason why we didn't go pediatrician is because we thought it's normal skin rash and went to the polyclinic. I didn't know it was so hard to diagnose. They can't even pinpoint what's going on at KK (3 docs to see my son -_-''). They only said if it gets worse, return again. my $85 for some lousy diagnosis..

And there wasn't any appointment. Just a phone call on Monday/Tuesday. Don't even know whether they will call.

Come to think about it, I think I better bring him to a private pediatrician at a private clinic. Hopefully I can get some solid explanation of his condition and what will happen next and whether I should continue with the vaccination.

I checked the list of common symptoms of vaccination given by the polyclinic. Rashes is not one of them.. =(

Hi Mummy Edwinie,

I know your posts have been many years back but your post is the only source that I saw with similar condition with my girl now. However, she is on her 1st 5in1 vaccine, Rota and Phuemocal vaccines. Just want to find out how was your son later on and did he continue with subsequent vaccination? Thank you.

Hi Mommy Mei Mei Star Cloud, would be grateful if you can share the outcome following your child’s experience with red spots and rash post-vaccination. My 3 mo son just had his 5-in-1 vac and rotarix a few days ago and is having red spots/rash on his arms and legs. Did you take him to see a paed and what did paed say? I would like to know what should be done. Thank you.

Hi Mummy VLYW,

Ya, my baby was referred to KKH Pediatric Dermatologies. The doctor said it was due to she is ezcema skin therefore somehow is the phneumoccal vaccines that may trigger it even baby skin looks good before the vaccination. The doctor precribed with low streroid and moisturizer to reduce it.

Thank you very much for sharing! My baby has eczema skin too. Very similar condition to your baby. Is your baby’s skin better now? How long did it take for the rash to go off? It has been 1 week and baby’s rash is still quite bad. I am moisturizing twice a day. Did the doctor say it’s okay to continue vaccination?

Yes, it's better now but still haven't fully recover. Doctor only advised need to let the skin condition better before the subsequent vaccination, otherwise, it may worsen it than the 1st vaccines. However, you mentioned that your baby only took 5 in 1 and rotarix right? You need to monitor it closely and try to apply more times if the skin is really dry or before it become crack. 1st week action should be very critical. As I ovelooked my baby skin on the first week so it become very difficult to recover and really takes time. It looks like will "spread" to all over the body, it will be more harder to take care. So other than moisturizer, I do use like aloe Vera gel to heal the rashes before putting the moisturizer as aloe Vera gel itself can't really moisturize much on ezcema skin. Mine one at least 3 to 4 times a day. The rash patches will be brownish when it is recovering so the skin will look a bit unpleasant. Do share with me your baby condition or if you have better way to manage. Jia you, mummy.

Oh ya, mummy, try to avoid let the baby wear too thick clothes. Try to uncover those affected skin area which will help the skin to recover faster as humid/hot may worsen the skin condition. Hope it is helpful for you. Pray hard for our baby to recover faster. Thanks.

Thank you so much for sharing! I am going through the exact same thing as you. We’ve seen two paeds now. Coz it is spreading all over. Making us more worried. Besides the legs and arms, now his body is covered with rash too. Red spots, patches, bumps. So heartbreaking to see him like that. Very glad that it doesn’t seem to bother him much. Does it bother your baby? Is it itchy for her? Yes he took 5-in-1 and Rotarix. His next vaccination is end of September. I am so worried about the outcome. :( I do use aloe vera gel too and also moisturize 2-3 times a day with Ceradan cream (the one with ceramide). This cream helped clear up his eczema flare up last month. And we also dress him in light and thin clothings and keep him cool as much as possible. Today, I gave him a milk bath as I read that it’s good for eczema. I will continue giving him milk bath a few times a week. Will let you know if this helps his skin.

Doctor also said best to let the skin get better before next vaccination. Praying hard for our babies to be cleared from this horrible rash! ❤

It seem like not the phneumoccal vaccines solely kicked off the reaction as what my paedia advises so. The rashes does bother my baby when she feel hot. Hopefully the milk bath is helpful for your son. Thanks for sharing too.
