Mind to share your recent labour experience with Raffles Hospital and its package?

I am a first time MTB, currently at about 7wks, my gynae is from Raffles Hospital - Dr Joan Thong, so most likely I would want to deliver my baby there too. :001_302:

hi
i delivered my 2nd n 3rd child at Raffles.
Service there is amazing but it can be pretty costly.
My gynae was Dr Lee i wUEN. Took up package at 12 weeks. Package includes scans, consult, routine urine test n vitamins. It was at $3000 but pay $2100 first n rest after delivery.
Package does not include the 3rd month specialised scan nor the 5 months detailed scan or any blood tests.
I chose 4 bedder for 3rd baby n total costs including deposit was $2500 in cash.It was normal delivery with epi.
For my 2nd child it was assisted with epi n also 4 bedder n the cost then was $3500 cash including deposit.
Do note however different drs have different priced packages.

Hi Ladynana,
I just delivered my first born natural delivery with epi at Raffles Hospital on 15 Jan 2010 and my gynae was Dr Joan Thong as well. Took up the package as Jasobias has described from 12 weeks onwards. Chose single bedder. Total cost yet to calculate coz still waiting for final bill.
Though the package states 3 ultrascans, Dr Thong did ultrascan for me most of the consultations. She's very professional. But she's very busy so sometimes got to wait very long. And since appointments are always packed, her consultations are usually chop chop unless you have questions to ask her. She always say short consultations are good means your baby is growing well. She's very clinical, to the point and not those motherly type (some mummies prefer motherly type) and won't go into areas not necessary/too early for discussion. So if you have questions, remember to write them down and ask, otherwise she'll end consultation very quickly.
I must commend the nurses at the Women's Centre (L12), and esp Dr Thong's nurses, very very friendly and nice!
The midwives and nurses at the delivery ward (L8) are also very professional, knowledgeable and friendly!
Service is definitely top-notch at Raffles.
By the way, the 3rd and 5th month detail scans should be by Dr Tony Tan, he's very gentle and nice gynae as well! But wait time really long too.

Hi Megtan,

Can u share with me more on the details of the package, like how much did u pay upfront and her package is $2,500 excluding the hospital stay? Only can sign up for the package on the 12th week, right?

Currently, I'm still on weekly follow up with Dr Thong ... So u meant that when its 3rd and 5th month, Dr Tony Tan will do the detail scan but those monthly follow up will still b done by Dr Thong?

The antenatal package costs $2600, includes routine check-ups (monthly, then fortnightly, then weekly), multi-vitamin, calcium pill (exclude fish-oil), normal delivery fee. Take from 12 weeks onwards. Pay 70% upfront, balance pay together with hospital bill. This package does not include the 3rd & 5th month detail scan and any other lab tests eg. blood tests.

Hospital bill around $3000 - $4000 covering medical consumables, pharmaceutical, doctor's attendance fees, ward (whether single, 2-bedder, 4-bedder - difference between each category is about $200+), whether assisted delivery or c-sect, epidural etc etc...

Baby bill around $900+ covering nursery, medical, PD etc etc...

There is an info sheet showing the various charges for antenatal package and another for delivery package. You can ask from the nurse at Women's Centre.

Yes, 3rd and 5th month they will schedule detail scan by Dr Tan. For those 2 visits, detail scan first by Dr Tan follow by usual consultation with Dr Thong. So expect to stay there for longer time.

Oh ya, to add on what I like about Raffles. You can call anytime (even after office hours) to ask to connect to your gynae during emergency e.g. I had bleeding during my first trimester after office hours. Called the hospital, quote my NRIC and name of gynae and within 5 mins, I'm on the line with her. Same as the PD, recently my baby was crying non-stop after feeding medicine (saw PD in the day time), called the hospital and likewise within 5 mins on the line with the PD already.

3rd month scan is about $300, 5th month scan about $360.

One thing to note, everything stated is before GST and they charge practice cost of $8 every visit even though on package. Nearer to delivery date, gynae will order fetal monitoring (hook up to machine for 1/2hr) got charge too...

Well, I would say all these costs add up to quite a bit!

Wow Indeed every little things added up the total bill will b quite high. But then what to do, she is the only gynae I feel comfortable n trusted. Guess really will have to spend a bomb. What will b the detailed scan like? Cause currently Dr Thong is still using the 'stick' to see my bb n heartbeat.

By 12 weeks, should be able to see the baby through ultra scan. In order to get a 'clearer' view, must have full bladder. The other time I had to wait 1hr+ with a full bladder -_-

A few days before the scan, have to do a blood test first; then on the day of the detail scan, the gynae will analysis results of the scan together with the blood test - determine whether got risks of genetic problems or Down's or other complications such as preeclampsia.

He even managed to see my baby's gender but then told me 80% so don't buy clothes yet :)

Just to share my package with Dr Koh Gim Hwee. His consultations at Tampines One or Raffles Hospital(RH)
=============================
ANTENATAL PACKAGE
$2200 (Deposit $1600) - Professional fees for normal delivery.
Starting at 3 months.
12-32 weeks: 3 weekly scans
33-36 weeks: 2 weekly scans
>36 weeks: weekly scan

INCLUSIONS:
1. Consultation of 10-12 visits
2. Ultrasound of Pelvis
3. Vitamins (Obimin & Calcium)
4. Urine Tests from 5 months onwards to check for protein and sugar
5. Postnatal consultation x 1

EXCLUSIONS:
1. Consultation out of antenatal appointments (e.g. fever, flu, cough etc)
2. Vacuum/Forcep delivery = +$300
3. Caesarean delivery = +$900
4. Doctor's attendance fee = +$100 per day
5. Paediatrician's attendance fee = +$150 per day
6. Antenatal Blood Screening
7. Hospitalisation Package
8. First Trimester Screening(FTS) = +$360 (excl. GST)
9. Fetal Anomaly(FA) Scan at 20 weeks = +$230(excl. GST)
10. Fish Oil supplements (Neurogain S Vegicaps)
11. Glucose Tolerance Test =+$39(excl. GST)
12. GBS culture test =+$44 (excl. GST)

=============================

Wanted to avoid incurring the recurring $8 'practice cost', so I didn't get fish oil supplements from them. So most appointments no need to pay, just get the supplements included in package.

Gynae first visit consultation is $85, which I figured is about standard for most specialists at Raffles Medical Group. Subsequent is $65 I think. First time I went (before 12 weeks) the ultrasound I was charged $105. All amounts above are before GST. The (FTS and FA) scans are done by Dr Tony Tan, so have to go RH itself.

Im not so sure about the final bill for delivery, as the bill is with hubby. must go dig up.

Overall, agree with other mummies comments as above-mentioned. Charges are expensive, compared to KKH. But Im not sure about comparison with other private hospitals. Service-wise is great. The nurses and mid-wives are very friendly and service-oriented. Not sure if its just Raffles, but many of the service staff are foreigners. Probably this is scenario through'out all hospitals since there is local healthcare professional shortage. Although I didn't manage to see the lactation consultant, Helen while I was staying there after delivery, she was very friendly and warm and helpful when I went for consultation during my confinement month, when I had blocked ducts.

I usually see Dr Koh at Tampines, and usually don't have to wait too long, unlike my sister's experience with her gynae whose clinic is at Mt E. I didn't see the point in waiting for half/one hour just to see gynae for 5 mins, so my selection of gynae was based on proximity (I stay in tampines so its convenient).

I notice that based on pre-natal package alone, Raffles' package is on the high end. If you ask around the forumers, there are other gynaes with packages <$2k. But if you have already decided on your gynae, then do your own calculations whether the package is worth it or not lor.

Oh yah, forgot to add.
You can go for the hospital ward tour, every Monday at 4pm. There is another timing, cant recall offhand now, either Wed or Thurs, I think. They will let you see the different rooms(1/2/4 bed and delivery suite) and you can ask them whatever queries you have.

Actually, Im not too sure what is an episiotomy, but I did have quite some stitches cos got tear. And yes, recover quite quickly, and can walk VERY SLOWLY on same day too (I had normal delivery with epidural). I was sitting in bed most of the time by Day 2, except when I was nagged by family members that I should be lying in bed....Kekeke so sianz to lie on my back the whole day... Stitches recovered well enough for me to be COMFORTABLY using my squatting toilet at home by three weeks time. :)

Although I do have to say that sometimes he seems pre-occupied in his own thoughts. Otherwise everything else is great with him, friendly and always willing to answer my innocuous questions patiently..:Dancing_tongue:

Jojoki: I was 'reviewing' my choice of gynae mid last year and two things helped me decide to go with Dr Koh. I was comfortable with my first consultation with him and your very reassuring posts on him.

megtan, are the ward charges that high!?? $3-4k? Just stay there for 2-3 days require so much cost?>
Hi cupidth,
the charges about there. Mine, if I recall correctly was about $5k before deducting Medisave. Probably cos it included the remainder of my pre-natal package of $600. I stayed for 3 nights,1-bedder, Normal delivery with epidural. Hubby stay over one night, charge $50, I think. Doctors' consultation fees and surgery fees do not come cheap...

For my girl, it came to about $1000. she stayed one more night cos was jaundiced the morning I was discharged. Paed's charges are on per day basis... :p

Ward charges are about $1000+ for 4-bedder, $1200+ for 2-bedder, $1400+ for 1-bedder based on 3D2N.
The balance are epidural, doctors, medicine etc etc...

thanks ladies. I signed up the package with them recently, and the nurse told me upon admission to hospital for delivery, medisave claimable is only $450. At that time, blur, now think of it, is weird, how can medisave claims be so little?

i think she was referring to e antenatal claims.. u'll hav to bring e original receipts of ur antenatal check-ups with ur gynae n can claim up to $450.. then for normal delivery can claim up to $1650 frm medisave..
