Hello! Wow a lot of talk on calcium. Yes, my second gynae did say calcium causes constipation and not good to take too much of it. Just consume calcium naturally through diet with vegetables - hordes of veggies cuz veggies provide both fiber and also calcium. For me, I am drinking Meiji skimmed milk or low fat milk and taking a slice of cheese every morning with my whole meal bread. Oh, cereal is also a good source of calcium. Hahaha I have been looking at food labels to supplement for calcium :)

Oh. I drink soya bean maybe like once a week. You know what I missed most... Grass jelly... Everytime go to the stall my eyes will linger longingly at chin chow...

While soya bean drink maybe good, but don't drink too much. My experienced mummy friend told me the high sugar intake will cause our feet to swell.

I've been going to Nuh subsidised clinic and I'm in a dilemma. To take up the antenatal package or not. And should I swop over to a permanent gynae instead? Seems abit lost as every visit so far is with a different gynae and most of them are the chop-chop kind as well. I'm not satisfied as I have a lot of questions to ask each visit but they seem to brush me off. Anyone facing the same issue? I was recommended to take Dr Su Lin Lin but I'm not sure if there will be a very significant price increase in the delivery charges.

Ya braxton is painful. Like menses cramp. But I don't feel pain yet. Braxton happens as early as 1st trimester only we don't feel it because its very mild. But 2nd to 3rd trimester you should feel it. But I think mine is not braxton,i think mine is wind constipated or post drinking milk kinda event.Because it happens for only one day and never again. My friend's contraction at 2nd trimester was painless. Seriously, I'm confused. Contraction should be painful right?

I dont know from week 16 baby is active. And now it's crazy active.EVERYDAY. So i cant answer but some mummies please help Faithmummy out.

I don't eat calcium pills. It's no good for the heart as mentioned here and also in my lectures.

Once yahoo singapore also bring out this news so something to take note of and after that I took my calcium via diet and not pills. Since i'm no bestfriend with milk, i take soyabean and cheese for calcium. Just my 2 cents worth.
There are lots of contradicting information out there. I believe it is the quality of supplement you are eating. Is it organic calcium or the calcium from oyster shells that tend to block absorption of mineral to the body. You can more calcium from carrot juice than from milk and it is digestible. Ya, I think it is important to do your research and not take any word for it. Great links.

I think noone here can answer your question because i'm afraid so far I see the mummies in this thread are going to private hospitals and few going to KK suite maybe specialist.I think for me, it's better to have one or 2 gynaes and not more. If you are having a healthy pregnancy, it's fine to keep changing yr gynae now since that's the hospital's procedure but by the 3rd trimester I suggest going to a specialist in NUH or go to private hospitals.I doubt it's expensive. At most 4K for hospital stay(depending on your room) and 1k plus for gynae's fee(only if you take package) but not inclusive of detail scanning and lab work.Mount alvernia quite cheap by a few bits compared to thomson, glens and mount E.

Sorry i'm not much of a help.

1st pregnancy suggest go for the better ones.

Gynae wise better stick to one by 3rd trimester. The one that going to deliver your child and put your mind at ease.

Yup. But I did medical so I immediately stopped. he he. I don't want to have a harden valve in my heart!! he he.
I'm very health conscious in terms of what supplements I take. All calcium will block Iron absorption in the small intestine even for milk. But it's fine as long as you take them hours apart. I was so depress at that time that Ca and Fe don't work together being so weak in my bones and anaemia! But for now, we are just focusing on calcium pills not dietary calcium. You are right about carrots!!....

Hopefully we all can come together and share inputs on health. It's important especially after giving birth our body kinda deteriorate. Blood loss and Ca loss!!!Argh.

Ya as long as it's calcium. However, suggested to take hours apart. Few hours apart. 3-4hours. No choice I guess. That's why I'm having a hard time during pregnancy. Probably I can skip Ca on alternate days but being pregnant gotta eat 2 of these minerals everyday. So, prbably eat our prenatal vitamins in the morning and drink our milk in the afternoon or vice versa.Definitely they dont cancel each other out but Ca reduce the absorption.

Read it here ON PUBMED this is a published medical journal: Calcium and iron absorption: mechanism of ac... [Eur J Clin Nutr. 1992] - PubMed - NCBI

The main points:
"Previous studies showing a marked inhibition by calcium had a lower molar ratio, but greater amounts of calcium were given. This suggests that a minimal concentration of calcium is needed to achieve an effect. The present results indirectly support our original hypothesis that the inhibitory effect of calcium on iron absorption is situated within the intestinal mucosal cells. The practical nutritional implications of the inhibitory effect of calcium are considerable since addition of milk, milkshake or cheese to common meals such as pizza or hamburger meals reduced iron absorption by 50-60%. It is recommended to reduce the intake of dairy products with the main meals providing most of the dietary iron, especially for those having the highest iron requirements i.e. children, teenagers and women at childbearing age."

My gynae say I have low placenta .. What can we do to ensure it is ok?
Sorry to hear but please avoid walking too much. Sorry but that's just the only way to go although its pretty impossible. Don't carry heavy objects.

But I think it's quite alright not to worry as it will move up. It's a common issue. But it's better to avoid having intercourse. Just make sure there's no bleeding. Do you feel pain or pressure>?

And lift your legs high everytime so tummy will be going against gravity.

There's a malay massage for this kind of issue but I'm not too sure. Kinda push the placenta up.It's painless.

I itch a lot too. But the elders told me not to scratch too much if not the lil one will have scratches. So sometimes I have to tahan.

As for calcium, I don't take the pills everyday now. Maybe just twice a week. I substitute it with Anelene chocolate milk (calcium concentrate), its a small packet of 110ml, gives me about 570mg of calcium. The pill is 600mg. Then again this is not sufficient because we'll need 900 to 1200mg a day. So we got to eat well and balanced. :))
