Hi Community,

General Characteristics: Charleston-style homes feature grand, symmetrical exteriors, are constructed of wood, airy with high ceilings, and have characteristically large and deep front porches, usually built of wood. The windows are large and usually have louvered shutters made of wood, which help with the heat and allows air to come in while still providing a certain level of privacy. The walls are usually made of brick or stucco with colonnades across the sides and back of the house. The roof of a Charleston-style home is pitched or gabled and is usually tall and often has dormer windows, which are windows that protrude from the plane of a sloping roof.

Single and Detached Homes: A double house, sometimes referred to as a detached house, is a house with four rooms on a floor--two in front and two in the back. Aside from the detached house, there's also the Charleston single house. These are homes that are two rooms deep and one room wide. The single house is the style most associated with homes in Charleston, South Carolina. Most Charleston-style house plans have side yards rather than front yards and are usually two or three stories high. The interiors of both types of homes include a grand staircase, elaborate cornices and large rooms that are well lit and well ventilated.

Piazzas: A unique feature of a Charleston-style house is that when you enter the front door, you are actually entering the porch and not the house itself. This porch is referred to as a piazza, a covered open porch or veranda, supported by columns or pillars, that stretches down the long side of the house. This is the most distinctive feature of a Charleston-style home. The piazza is an outdoor living space where you can enjoy the view of your side garden and serves as both a passage and a porch. Piazzas provide cross-ventilation and shade you from the heat and the sun. When building a porch, you might also enclose the entire porch with a screen. This is usually done to prevent insects from coming into the porch as well as to provide shade from the sun.

Best Regards

Hello Friends,

Our collection of Charleston House Plans provide modern design features while reflecting the historical, southern beauty of older plantation homes built in the 1800s. Charleston house plans became an architecturally unique style as a result of the historical homes built in Charleston, South Carolina. Southern charm and classical beauty offset warmer climates and expansive, natural landscapes. The house plans featured on America's Best House Plans draw from these architectural sensibilities while including modern conveniences, such as open floor plans and more recent developments in design.

Thanks and Regards,
William Hayden
