Ex-MOE Teacher - O Lvl Bio & Chem Tuition [New intake! 2016]

Dear Parents,

I am an ex-MOE Teacher with 7 years of teaching experience. I am well versed in GCE O Level syllabus in Pure Chemistry, Pure Biology, Combined Sciences (Bio/Chem), Combined Sciences (Phys/Chem) as well as Lower Secondary Science. I can explain abstract concepts in a succinct manner, making it easy for the slower students to understand me. The strength in my teaching is my ability to help weak students weed out some of their misconceptions conceived in their journey of learning science. I can help them to unlearn, understand and relearn important scientific concepts. Thereafter, once the student is able to understand scientific concepts well, I can work with him/her to improve his/her answering techniques, data-reading skills and analysis skills so that he/she can move towards a distinction grade eventually.

I provide practice worksheets and other school exam papers.

Currently I'm doing 1-to-1 or group tuition in Novena/Newton/Bukit Timah/Town/Boon Keng/Bendemeer/Potong Pasir/ Serangoon/Kovan area.

Expected tuition rate per hour:
1-1 tuition (at students' place): $70/h (Upper Sec) $65/h (Lower Sec) - min 2 hrs
Group tuition (at students' place): $35/pax/hr (min 2 students) - min 2 hrs

If your child is sitting for his/her O levels in 2016/2017, the best time to start him/her off on the right track is NOW. Drop me a msg to discuss how we can help your child realise his/her fullest potential.

Did your child fail to perform up to his/her own expectations in his/her SA2 Biology/Chemistry exams, despite burning hours of midnight oil to study?

Have you ever brushed it off lightly and attributed the poor marks to their lack of effort?

Don't.

Because more often than not, the REAL PROBLEM lies in the way CORRECTIONS (especially for exams) is being done in school.

Very often, corrections for exam scripts is a very rushed affair, despite the amount of time and effort both teachers and students had put into this high-stake assessment.

Corrections often end up to be more of a neck-and-hand exercise for the students (which means endless and brainless copying of answers from the answer scheme by the students). And very often, after all the copying, the students still don't really know where or why did they go wrong.

AND THE WORSE THING IS:

If not corrected, the conceptual error remains within the student and he/she will make the same mistake again and again and again.

Simply because no one bothered to explain to your child why is it wrong. (Or the teacher did explained the mistake generally to the class, but your child still doesn't understand.
)

That is where my expertise as an ex-MOE teacher can come in useful for your child. If your child is sitting for his/her O levels in 2016/2017, the best time to start him/her off on the right track is NOW. Drop me a msg to discuss how we can help your child realise his/her fullest potential.

Dear parents (and students),

Do you know how Cambridge examiners grade the O Level exam papers?

Do you know how a Cambridge marking scheme really look like?

Question 8a from 5090 Biology Cambridge International O Level Paper

Answer to question 8a from 5090 Biology Cambridge International O Level Paper

:? :? :?

Reading the marking scheme from Cambridge requires the trained eye of an experienced teacher. Every symbol and short note within the marking scheme has a meaning. In other words, even a biology trained person (who is not a teacher by profession) might not be able to decipher the codes unless he/she had sat through a teacher training session with the Cambridge markers before.

Paying an ex-MOE teacher to tutor your child may be expensive, but our knowledge will make the money worth. Ex-MOE teachers know how the rules of the game (played by Cambridge) better, hence we give our students the much-needed extra edge during the actual O levels exams.

Dear Parents (and students),

Since my last post was on Biology paper, today I share the marking scheme for an O level Chemistry Paper.

Qn A2 (d) and (e) from 5070 Chemistry O Level Paper (2014)

Answer A2 (d) and (e) from 5070 Chemistry O Level Paper (2014)

Students who excel in Biology generally have strong language skills, hence allowing them to express their understanding of biology concepts in a succinct, unambiguous manner.

Students who excel in Chemistry generally have good understanding of abstract concepts (e.g. they need to visualise how an atom, a molecule and an ion looks like even if no one have seen them before) and they generally have a STRONG FOUNDATION in sec 3 topics like writing of chemical formulae and chemical equations.

As a teacher who teaches both Chemistry and Biology, I can see students generally find it easier to score in Chemistry than in Biology. The long structured qns in Chemistry are more or less 'standard', meaning students can actually memorise standard TYS answers and score well.

And if your child is not scoring up to expectations in his/her Chemistry exams, then I must say he/she has not found the right teacher yet - the one teacher who can make him/her understand.

Sometimes we also need some chemistry between the child and the teacher in order for the child to understand the subject of Chemistry.:wong19:

Even if your child failed with a F9 in chemistry this year, let's give Chemistry one more chance and let me help your child.

Dear Parents,

I have received several enquiries since my post came online a few weeks ago.

Here are some FAQ:

FAQ1: Do you travel to Bedok/Boon Lay/Woodlands?
Ans: Nope. Unless there are two or more consecutive sessions in that area which warrants my travelling time. I do not drive, hence it doesn't make much sense for me to make a 1hr journey to your house, give 1.5-2hr tuition, then spend another 1hr travelling back.

Areas I teach: Novena/Newton/Bukit Timah/Town/Balestier/Boon Keng/Bendemeer/Potong Pasir/Serangoon/Kovan/AMK/Toa Payoh

FAQ2: Can you give a discount?
Ans: Nope. My rates are in accordance to the current market prices. However, if you can form your own mini-tuition group of two students or more, the price per pax will be reduced by 50%!

FAQ3: Do you teach A level Biology?

Ans: I can, but not currently.

FAQ4: Can my kid travel to your place for tuition?
Ans: Of course. I offer a discount on the hourly rates if tuition is done in my house. My flat is conveniently located near Boon Keng MRT station (NE9) - a mere one min walk from mrt station.

FAQ5: Tell me a bit more about your teaching experience.
Ans: Well, I have taught in both good and neighbourhood schools before. I have experience teaching a very wide and diversed spectrum of students, from the creme-la-creme bright kids to the really weak and slow ones. I personally believe that every student CAN learn, as long as the student finds the right mentor for him/her.
There's nothing to boast about if a teacher can produce an A1 from a student whose PSLE t-score is 250++. My personal record so far is producing an A1 in combined science (bio/chem) from a Sec 5 Normal Academic student whose PSLE score was only 162. The next best record is an A2 in Pure Biology from a Sec 4 Express student whose PSLE score is only a borderline 192.

If you have any other questions not answered in my FAQ, please feel free to drop me a msg at 90697409.

Good news good news!

Testimonial from Sec 4 student (2015) - she collected her results today.

Another piece of good news from Sec 4 student (2015)!

I first taught this student only in Jan 2015, and her school results were in a very bad state - E8 for biology, F9 for chemistry in sec 3 EOY exams. Her foundations in both subjects were very weak and she had even problems passing MCQ paper, not to mention the harder Paper 2.

Through 10 odd months of sheer hard work (reteaching basic concepts once more and practising TYS questions with her), I'm very very proud of what this student has achieved and I'm glad I played a role in helping her to reach her achievements today.
