pkshl, I read in one of the TODAY newspapers that a lady got this problem as well. She went to GP and was prescribed cream but it didn't subside and started to become swollen. I think if the spots start to get painful or are filled with pus, it's better to make a trip down to NSC.

I found the website and news story:

What happens when the diagnosis is wrong?

We should know our bodies better, yet are at the mercy of incorrect prescriptions

Letter from Emeline Wee
05:55 AM Sep 30, 2009

ON SEPT 19, I woke up with my face covered with a lumpy red rash across my forehead, nose and cheeks. Some rash had also started to develop on parts of my upper body. My face was red and swollen, and was itching badly. I decided to go to a clinic near my house in Admiralty.

The general practitioner (GP) who attended to me was the relief doctor, since it was the day before Hari Raya Puasa, a public holiday.

He examined the rashes and asked if I had recently travelled out of the country or changed the facial products I use. I told him I had not.

The doctor glanced through my medical history, and noted that I had previously sought medical help at the clinic for my acne. He then told my husband and I that this was most likely another acne attack.

I disagreed, and told him that this did not seem to be acne, and that my acne had never spread like this, especially not beyond the face and onto the upper body.

Nonetheless, the doctor insisted it was acne and prescribed the medication that the clinic had previously prescribed me for acne. I left the clinic at best half-convinced by the diagnosis - but figured that, after all, he is the doctor and should know better, so I used the medication accordingly.

Four days of following his prescription passed, and the rash got worse, with my entire face red and swollen. The itch was nearly unbearable. My husband rushed me to a skin specialist downtown, who told me I was suffering from a serious skin allergy possibly due to a virus attack or food consumption - not acne.

He added that the acne medication the GP had given had caused my face to swell further and exacerbated the itching.

Most patients have no recourse but to assume a GP's diagnosis is accurate. I was disappointed that this doctor did not take into consideration my comments, when I best know how my own body reacts.

Could the medical authorities advise if patients can ask clinics for a refund for the wrong diagnosis and wrong medications given? What actions can patients take if they realise they have been diagnosed wrongly?

wah so jialat!
but i do agree!
pin was so called diagnosed with HFMD cos initially she had sores in her mouth.
n rashes on her body, but not HFMD kinds. so i took it as she had it.
then i went on to follow up with my doc but he was away so there was a relief doc n went on giving me more cream saying rubbish abt HFMD, like the rashes (which got more!) n he say its the outbreak, after one week they will clear..
after 2 weeks, i went back n my doc not there again! so another relif doc was there, n he say the skin will peel off and pin will be ok alr.but it didnt!! fed up n brought pin to this skin specialist clinic n the doc say it was just skin allergy!!! nt HFMD!!
i think i will consult the skin specialist clinic at my hse there.

pkshl, if u need the add, can let me knwo. its very good. alot of ppl go there. my frens who been there also solve his very bad acne problem... :)

i have this one red spot on my face. it used to be a pimple, but instead of just becoming a blemish, it turned into a red spot. and it's been there for the past couple of months. aloe vera helps?

Hi Tracyk,

The spot could have become and infection. That time I had a lump like that when I was breastfeeding and I thought that it was a blocked duct or something... It became so painful even when I gently touch it. In the end I went to see a doc and he said it was an infection and gave me antibiotics.

I think if the spot has pus and is painful, it is best to see a doctor...
