Doctors, nurses and lactation consultants agree: breast is best. But when you need to feed your infant by bottle, it is necessary to find baby bottles that will not lead to nipple confusion but will instead allow your baby to switch easily between feeding methods. In general, baby bottles with wide, slow-flow nipples will most easily allow for these transitions. Some breast pump manufacturers also market baby bottles and you may be able to pump directly into the same bottle you use for feedings. Consider the age of the baby, as older infants are less prone to nipple confusion; the health of the baby, as issues like reflux and colic may dictate a specific bottle design; whether the baby will be switching between bottle and breast regularly or only occasionally; and whether your lifestyle dictates the need for disposable inserts.
