Introduction

“Brian dislikes water on his face when bathing. He cries whenever he is near or in the water. Will he be able to enjoy water one day?”

“Sally loves water and jumps into the pool when she sees one. We have to rescue her from the water frequently.”

“Ben is only 25 years old. After an accident, he is wheelchair bound. Will he ever be able to transfer himself into the pool and enjoy the water again like he used to?”

“Peter cannot pay attention during swimming class.. The coach says he is naughty and distrupts the lesson… Will he be able to learn swimming again?”

Do the above scenarios sound familiar to you? Feeling lost and do not know where and how to get your child to swim? Come and join the second public education workshop conducted by AquaFins on 29 April 2010.

Abstract

Water is one of the most important resources human beings depend on. Besides being a survival source, water is therapeutic for one with disabilities to achieve better physical and emotional well being. Aquatic movement has benefited many people with disabilities. A person with a disability show significant improvement in confidence, movement and daily functioning skills such as transferring and self care through the activities conducted in water.

In this workshop, you will learn about 1. Identifying individual’s strength and weakness. 2. What is basic water movement and familiarization before swimming strokes? 3. How to perform simple task to gain confidence and stable movement in water. 4. Positive communication and encouragement.

Beside water skills, we will be sharing on how to conduct simple assessment of an individual’s physical and how to integrate water skills and daily functioning skill in a session at the pool.

Profile of Speakers

[SIZE=+1]Danny, Trainer for Special Needs[/SIZE]
Danny graduated from National Institute of Education (NIE) Singapore with a diploma in special education. During his teaching career in special schools, he has encountered children with cerebral palsy, autism and multi-disabilities.

He has been coaching aquatic movement and swimming to people with special needs since 1993. Danny is a qualified swimming coach, life saving instructor and also a registered AustSwim Teacher for able-bodies and people with special needs. He was trained in TOP programme which is a UK physical education programme that includes people with special needs.

Danny was the former Head Coach for the Singapore Disability Sports Council where he spearheaded a project that includes children with autism in mainstream schools into competitive swimming. He was the team manager for Team Singapore where the team came home with Singapore’s first Paralympic Gold Medal in swimming during the Beijing Paralympics 2008.

His passion and dedication in disability sports continue to shine through his innovative concepts where he designed the KITES © Programme to aid coaches and teachers on how to conduct adaptive activities for persons with special needs. He is also the pioneer of an AquaFins early intervention programme which is government-registered.


[SIZE=+1]Wee Chui Mei, Physical Educatior[/SIZE]
Chiu Mei started coaching and teaching People with Special Needs in the year 1999 while she was studying for her Bachelor of Physical and Health Education (BPHE) in Perth, University of Western Australia. (UWA). To pursue her interests in motor skills development and special needs, she completed her Master of Special Education with Honours, specializes in study of autism.

As a qualified NIE teacher, she also holds a Certificate in Autism and worked with pupils both from the mainstream, as well as special school. She worked as a part-time adjunct lecturer at NIE, and supervised trainee teachers and conducted PE workshops. Currently, she works at Republic Polytechnic under the Sports department. Her areas of specialty are adapted physical activities and human and motor development.

She is also a qualified swimming coach under the National Registry of Coaches (NROC) and a registered AustSwim Teacher for Regular and People with Special Needs.

Workshop objectives

1. To understand the physical development of a child as a foundation for skill development in water and on land activities
2. To understand the importance of movement to move efficiently, sensory stimulation and improve coordination and balance.
3. To be able to do simple body assessment

Workshop outline

1. Understanding basic fundamental movement skills
2. Importance of gross and manipulative skills for stroke development in swimming
3. The importance of movement in relation to daily functional activities and sensory integration
4. Learn to assess physical body

Target audience

This workshop is for parents, teachers or anyone who is working or interested in working with children/persons with special needs.

Go for it! I've seen Danny work with special kids, and he's good! Not many qualified swim teachers around, what more, specialising in special needs kids!

Really?? you saw Danny before??

That's why,there are few qualified swim teachers for special needs children... me tink of going... but seems like my timing cannt allow me to... :bsad:

Yes, a friend of mine has a child learning swimming from him. It's much like water therapy as well. Some of his students also take part in the disability swim meet. I think there's one this June.

Besides Danny, I dont't think I know of anyone else here specialising in teaching special needs kids!:bsad:
