Depends you taking 6-in-1 or 5-in-1.

6-in-1 takes less jab so don't have to take so early.
Fact #1: 6-in-1 is actually taking 5-in-1 & HepB all in one go.

Fact #2: if you do 5-in-1, it will be administered at 3rd month while HepB will be administered at 1st month.

Fact #3: if you do 6-in-1, it will be administered at 2nd month

Fact #4: HepB doesn't cause fever ... only 5-in-1 & 6-in-1 will

So, yes ... the baby get jabbed earlier in the 1st month instead of the 2nd.
But WHY should this be a concern?

I mean, within the first 2 weeks of birth, all babies in Singapore would still have already been subjected to BCG jab & some heel probes (think it was for jaundice? ... can't quite remember already).

On the contrary, by taking 6-in-1, you are subjecting the baby to a high fever earlier ... why subject your child to this risk & discomfort?

Refer to your baby's Health Booklet ...

All the mandatory vaccinations are tabulated on the 2nd last page, including the timeline.

Other optional vaccinations for your consideration & deliberation include (in chronological sequence):
1) Rotavirus
2) Pneumoccocal (up to 3 depending on when you start administering on baby @ $150 each)
3) Chickenpox (1 jab only)
4) HepA 9 (2 jabs in all)
5) Influenza (annual jabs)

For the record, I skipped the first & the last for my Seamus ... intend to do the same for my Siggi too.

My nephew had his 6-in-1 jab @ a neighbourhood family clinic in Hougang. Cost abt $130 incl consultation. Using CDA acct for paymt. His PD offers it abt $160 incl consultation @ MAH. But cannot use CDA acct or nets. Only cash or visa.

The key is to always enquiry before you engage their service. :001_302:

Any 6-in-1 injection for baby in east to recommend? How much?
Hi Oppsgal.

You can chk out w/ ur family doctor @ neighbourhood on the charges and payment mode.

Which area of the east are you referring? Pasir Ris? Tampines? Sengkang? Hougang?

i think PD Simon Ng @ MAH offers good price among the PDs. He's very patient, nice n thoughtful PD. His clinic accepts visa n cash. Don't know if nets and cda are accepted @ clinic now.

hi.

per my understanding from my gp, it's the "P" or "D" element that causes the fever. Back in those days before the availabilities of 3-in-1 or 5-in-1 then 6-in-1 jabs, my eldest had the single jab plus oral n still had fever. When 3-in-1 was introduced, my 2nd took the 3-in-1 jab, either no fever or slight fever that lasts not more than 2 days.

My nephew did not have any fever @ 1st jab of 6-in-1 jab but a short/ slight fever 3 days after the 2nd 6-in-1 jab.

Hence, i would say there's no guarantee there will not be any fever. It depends individual ultimately. :)

I think you have missed my point totally.
I did not say anything about guarantee of no fever when you take 5-in-1 ... what I said was "why subject the baby to a fever earlier than necessary?".

Here's why I said that, as summarised below:

What is 6-in-1?
It is actually 5-in-1 plus Hep B, taken at the same time.

What causes fever?
It's the 5-in-1 ... which therefore, also includes the 6-in-1.
In other words, taking Hep B on its own would not cause fever ... this is a fact for all babies.

When does the baby get jabbed?
If you choose to do 6-in-1, then it's the 2nd month, 4th month & 5th month.
If you choose to do 5-in-1 & Hep B separately, then it's the 1st month & 5th or 6th month (Hep B) ... plus 3rd month, 4th month & 5th month (5-in-1).

When would the baby be first experiencing a fever (due to 5-in-1 or 6-in-1) ... assuming the worst case that the baby would get one?
If you choose to do 6-in-1 ... it would be the 2nd month.
If you choose to do 5-in-1 ... it would be the 3rd month.

IMHO, when dealing with young babies (ie, before they reach 6 months old), I would always advise daddies & mummies to exercise caution ... esepcially if they are not even sure how to take care of the infant when he/she end up with a fever. This is not gonna be a case of popping a panadol or two, which we adult would commonly do lor.

Hi Oppsgal.

Answer to the jab cost @ MAH found earlier. Alteratively, you can call this clinic @ 6356 8143 to check and make appt. 5-in-1 jab costs around $120. Can't remember if it's inclusive of consultation as well. :p

Hi Vroomvroom.

I understand your kind concerns abt infant's fever. Just to further clarify, it's the element 'P' or 'D' found in the DPT/ DT vaccine that kinda causes fever. DPT/ DT vaccine - 1st does given @ 3M, 2nd dose @ 4M and 3rd dose @ 5M. Some infants do get high fever for a few days while others don't. Few just have slight fever that last 2 days and gone. In short, it still boils down to how well does the infant's body react to the jabs. However, i notice their crankiness after the jabs. Hee.... So, about "why subject the baby to fever earlier when unnecessary?" i think fever is kinda inevitable.

Yes! Parents may want to have the fever medicine and cooling plasters on stand-by for convenience. N note that the temperature often rises @ night. So parents gotta beware n check on the temperature. Sponging them with damp towels if necessary too. :)

This is true if you are taking the 5-in-1 ...

If parents choose to do 6-in-1, then the first dose of the DPT/DT vaccine is effectively being administered @ 2M.
Think about it ... you'd probably see my point eventually.

Yes, fever is inevitable ... but there is a BIG difference if & when your baby gets the fever @ 2M or 3M, worst still if the baby is a pre-term one.

Bearing this fact in mind, now try to give me 1 good reason why it's more beneficial to administer the 6-in-1 on your baby.
Maybe I am abnormal, BUT I certainly dun think "more convenient, less hassle" is a good reason ... especially when it's only a good reason for the adults.

I believe is for less pain for the baby. Imagine every few months a needle has to be poke into the baby. For 6-in-1 there will be less needle needed.

Pain caused by a needle ... how long does it last?
A few seconds at most, agree?

Fits & brain damage caused by a high fever ... you think this would last only a few seconds or a lifetime?
Now you understand WHY I'm so irritatingly persistent in putting my point across?

Going to the PD is always the better option ...
... if nothing else, he/she has their own reputations to look after.

Compared to a polyclinic, the doctors are roving & they are no specialists at handling children, much less toddlers.
