My story: breastfeeding support at TMC after birth

perhaps ... This management really sucks. What happened at the hospital you gave birth at, uddermummy?
i kenna scolding from the nurses for dirtying the bedsheets with my blood when i fainted from the pain and hunger!!! Also, when administering antibiotics, they deliberately made it more painful when i told them that i was hurting.

And when they cleaned me on the first day after my c-section, let's just say that i've never been made to feel so humiliated in my whole entire life.

oh ya, then every time i got prob with bf i'd call the LC at Kandang Kerbau Hospital. Free advice!!! I feel that the after-delivery service by KK is good also. Some of my friends who gave birth at other hospitals dont even know who to call or ask when they got bfding probs.
LC service at Kandang Kerbau Hospital is free of charge? that's great! that time i called their ask-a-nurse service, was charged $2.40 and didn't get the answer i want, sian...

I must ask them for the number to call for breastfeeding advice after i deliver then, thanks for the info snowbear! Btw your baby is so cute :)

Yup, just call the main line and ask for the LC to call u back. They'll get back to u within the day. The ask-a-nurse svc expensive laa..

my goodness! Good thing TMC wasn't like that... If not for their breastfeeding support (or the lack of it), I might actually go back...

i think i'm consider luckier... the staff got a senior nurse who's quite good at BF-ing to teach me, though she's not a LC...

during the first few days, BB dun wanna latch on cos i was told tt i've inverted n short nipples... i used the nipple shield i brought along and he still dun wanna latch on... keep wailing until his face was red... no choice gonna feed him with FM for e 1st 3days there...

finally this morning b4 i discharge, a staff who seems more experience than the others nurses, came in and helped me, she keep encouraging me not to give up, and check on my nipple shield and told me i've bought the wrong size.. she got me the right size and truth enough, BB able to latch on with the help of the nipple shield..

She said I can try to take out the shield to let BB latch on again but aft i took out the shield, BB can't suck on alrdy =(

i think it may depend on individual... mayb i was luckier to be in a ward where there's a exp nurse there to help...

but one thing i agreed with Amulet, i also on c-sect and some nurses just push BB in and left... den i gonna struggle up from the bed to carry him...

I'm fully giving my baby expressed breast milk. If your breasts are still hard after pumping, it could mean that there's still milk there. What I do is that I would massage my breast while pumping. This makes the milk spurt out!

And please do that soon, or else it might become engorged, blocked and painful.

Jiayou!

Wei, congrats! Dun worry, 1st few days will pump little 1... I was like that too. Try use warm damp towel put onto ur breast den massage abit b4 pumping. It helps alot...

regina, if possible, quickly get a lact consultant to help you with the latch. If your nipples are bleeding, it means that bb doesn't have a good latch. And the pain can kill!

The asymmetric latch works best for me: the bb's chin touches the breast and the nose is not blocked.

when bb is sucking, if you can feel the bb sucking on the nipples, must quickly stop and relatch. I know I will def kenna sore nipples if i can feel bb's tongue on my nipples.

You should feel the tongue around the nipples or at the aereola.

hee.. electric pump better lahhh... told you earlier that my friend's wife use the manual one till hand got blisters. :)

You already decided on the Avent pump? Not looking at other brands?

Like what other mummies have said, if your nipples are painful/ bleeding, baby's latch is not correct. Your breasts shouldn't feel hard after pumping. If they're still hard after pumping for 30min, it means that there are some blocked ducts. Put a warm towel on your breasts before pumping, then massage your breasts in circular motion (work towards your nipple). As you pump, massage your breasts and massage and press on the hard parts. It'll be painful but you have to bear with it. After pumping, your breasts shld feel soft. Last time i dunno.. keep pumping but breasts still rock hard after pumping. I tot was ok coz i was pumping out 100+ml and didn't suspect anything. Ended up with super sore nipples coz according to the LC, coz of the blocked ducts the pump kept pulling harder to get the milk out.

i tot tmc very pro bfeed one? i delivered at raffles and it was a HEAVENLY experience.. seriously. to start off with, the place was spacious.. quiet n calming. midwives were experienced, friendly and humorous. My gynae was superb.. my whole delivery was literally painless! I was up n about hours after delivery

my baby could not be put to my breast right away because i was diabetic. and her glucose level had to be checked immediately after birth. but within half an hour.she was wheeled in to my ward (2 bedded) she spent the whole day with my till 8pm. The nurses are super prompt in responding to my calls.

ALL the nurses at random who helped me breastfeed was excellent!! The nurse politely asked if i needed help, asked if she could help massage my breast... told me it will hurt a bit as she try to express alittle colostrum to get my bb latch on, also tot me various breastfeeding position.. as i requested fr total bf.. they brought my baby in. even at 3 am... and after they took her back to the nursery... 15 ms later they brought her in again fr me to feed as she was still unsettled..

when my bb was admited fr jaundice after around 5 days... i went to see the lactation specialist Helen. She is a fantastic woman! she breastfed fr 2.5 yrs... n she is super encouraging n gentle. She even asked me to stay fr a postnatal class. tot us how to change baby.. bathe, bf umblical cord care.. etc.. very informative. the model was even a live baby...

Overall exp even post delivery was SUPERB!! while my bb was under the billilights.. i stayed there to bf her.. n inbetween they let me used the hosp pump to pump bm... which they provide sterilised bottles fr me to keep ebm. i bf n pump in between.. n BOY by the next day my milk was shooting like fountain!!

I seriously recommend Raffles Hospital fr any mummies to be!

That's what I thought too. I spoke with my gynae abt this and she said she'd heard some of her patients say the same thing but thought they were isolated cases. Well, TMC will definitely NOT be getting my money next time... :nah:

u knw my first choice was TMC cos i herd they VERY PRO BF.. and very friendly nurses.. and is the top choice for delivery.. but also heard they are very EX so it was out of the question. MT E? never even consider cos think its SUPER ex... but my cous had really good exp there.

maybe raffles maternity ward is good cos they r not so swarmed with patients.. raffles not a popular choice for delivery huh... but ya I am very blessed la.. the entire team was just fantastic there. n there was no one occupying the other bed so i had the whole room to myself heheh!! my hubby even stayed a night there with me... supposedly not allowed cos 2 bedder.. but they din chase him away.. so he accompanied me 1 night.

Uddermummy, why mt e not good meh?
