Advises for naming babies (Chinese name) with examples

A friend in the forum asked a question about baby’s naming. So let’s have a simple and brief look on the topic.

The question is:
“Anyone knows in detail how does getting a geomancer to suggest a baby's name work?
I've read a couple of threads and seem like mostly mentioned about zi and the element that they child lacks.
Any further understanding on this?”

To answer the question:So if the child lack of some kind of element, we just give him the element, for example, he/she lacks of the element of gold, give him/her 鑫;he/she lacks of the element of water, give him/her 淼. Would this be the case?

Let’s think in this way, if you are thirsty, can you drink 2 tons of water? Probably you can, with your big enough stomach; otherwise the water drowns you.

Naming from geomancy point of view, the name should go with the time that the kid born. To let the name provides the elements (please note, plural here not single) which are beneficial to him/her.

From general point of view:

A people’s name is for his/her identification, it’s mainly used by others. So it needs to consider whether it’s recognizable by others. Some people’s names are especially difficult to recognize, even school teachers have to look them up in dictionary.

Some parents think that the naming of children the more esoteric the better, the more uncommon words the deeper the meaning. Unfortunately it is not true. Uncommon words are not necessarily have deep meanings, while the biggest drawback of uncommon words is they are hard to recognized, most of the time they are difficult to write as well. ponder this, if the name words are uncommon, how could the child like to learn to write his/her name?

Did you ever encounter this? You happen to ask a colleague about his/her son/daughter’s Chinese name, he/she knows the what’s called but after scratched his/her head, he/she told you don’t know what the words are.

I see many cases at the GOVERNMENT birth registration counter: the parents were sitting at registration counter, GOVERNMENT officer sitting behind the counter, who turned the computer monitor to the parents and asking “Is this word?”, “Is this word?”, “Is this word?”…… the parents looked each other with puzzled faces. Finally they took out a piece of paper or look at their sms at cell phone, and look them up at the officer’s monitor with many difficulties (by the way, a big “Thank You” to GOVERNMENT which has a well developed word database so our lovely parents can find the words). This is not totally because of the parents’ Chinese language level, most of time it’s because they are given uncommon Chinese words. Even these Chinese words have good meanings (most of time they are nouns, I am afraid), such as (2 easy examples) 玚 a type of jade; 敔 a type of musical instrument, what’ s the point?

The name must have certain meaning, this is the tradition of Chinese. For instance you want the child to become a musician, you might name him 乐华or 舒韵; if you want your child to serve Navy in future, you can name him 健海etc.
On the other hand, pronunciation of the name must be good, to avoid the similarities of negative things such as dead, rubbish etc.

There are many ways to name a child, a few common ways are:
Name by the season/ month/place born
Name by moral of the name
Name by parents’ expectation on the child
Name by goodness and beauty
Name by the aspiration

Thanks for the comment.

Everybody has their skills, you know to do something good that I don’t and he/she knows to do something good that you don’t etc. We mean to help people with our expertise, or in another word, to think in a different angel with information normally not obvious but does exist.

We don’t dub ourselves Masters, especially there are many “Masters” now.
